Beating boredom BB-style…
It’s school holidays here … we have no fewer than four lots of visitors making the trek out to Granite Glen to visit over the two-week break. Lucky I have such determined friends, that a five hour drive doesn’t deter them from a bush adventure. And lucky I have big fridges… a dryer.
The weather we have been blessed with so far might be challenging in some parts of the world, where a similar gathering of kids occurs… cause it’s been raining. Rain and kids is normally a recipe for boredom and frustrated kids. But not out here…while the Wii Sports, the billiard table and the Nintendo DS’s have been trotted out for short periods, the real excitement has been found elsewhere.
Want to see?
In no particular order, some holidays highlights (three days in) have been :
Flooded gullies. Rain out here is a recipe for kids to get their togs on and start exploring. (Look close to see the kid with the goggles… he’s a visitor. Ours know the chances of seeing anything underwater around here is nil. Check out the colour of the water!)
Rain is pretty. Especially on gum leaves…
I have a very sore toe. I dropped a bottle of chardonnay on it Sunday night – the bottle broke *sob* and my toenail is now black. I can’t work out whether this is God’s way of telling me to drink less chardonnay or that I am just clumsy. And that I need an appointment STAT with a pedicure place…
Violet lost a tooth. It’s been horizontal in her mouth for about three days. Never has a tooth taken so long to vacate it’s place in the mouth. She adored grossing us out with it, poking her tongue and flicking it forward like a tic tac. We all cheered when it went. However the Tooth Fairy failed to show last night. I will be writing to the Fairy Tale Department to complain. No more chardonnay for the Tooth Fairy.
Among our distractions for rainy school holidays are whip-cracking lessons. This little darlin’ is as determined as our Violet. She ‘got it’ within 20 minutes of picking up the leather. We are now having trouble removing it from her fist. Her Mum is not sure whether to be proud or scared…
So that’s it from Granite Glen – a drizzly, Tooth Fairy-less, smashing, cracking place to be.

So… how are you spending your holidays?
And what remedies do you have for boredom on wet school vacations?

The whip cracking actually sounds quite fun!

In Hungary on a horse farm, the “horse shepherds” put on a show for tourists. One of the skills they demonstrate is using the whip. they then invite audience members to see if they can pop a bottle off a fence post. If you can, the prize is a very nice bottle of wine.
Of the 9 people trying, no one took home a bottle of wine. What a pity! LOL

Ah, we have wildlife to keep us on our toes… No whip cracking, though. Wet here also.

Oh, glorious rain! That’s pretty cool, playing in the waterfall like that.
Yes to the pedicure. But no, God is not telling you to stop drinking wine. He does want you to be less clumsy, though.

Kids go together with water. That’s where they came from and that is where they would still live if they could.
Violet’s dimples are gorgeous! Hehe on the slacker tooth fairy. Tell her to get crackin’

All wonderful fun, bet everyone had a ball. The errant bottle was obviously slippery with condensation…..never say no to Chardonnay.
Sorry ’bout the toe though.

Perhaps a light zinfandel would have been easier on the toe?
My children are all grown up and find their own holiday entertainment. I do miss the old days.

And perhaps you need a couple snorts of ‘pain killer’ to ease your poor toe.

I loved the flooded gullies when I was a kid. Even after the water was gone it was still fun. Mud up to the waist. We used to have to be hosed off before we went home! Good “clean” fun!
Sorry about your toe.

Fun bit of trivia regarding the whip cracking—when you are able to ‘crack’ it, you are breaking the speed of sound.
Playing in the rain around here is dangerous. It is most often accompanied by lightning.
The tooth fairy has forgotten to come to our house more than once. She just leaves a very tiny note the next night in apology, along with the money.
I’ve also forgotten to call her to announce the lost tooth. Now, I put a post-it note on my mirror to remind me before I go to bed to call her.–Hint, hint.
