Lady Lacey

An update on one of our old blog stars…

Lacey the Fabulous.

Ex-rodeo pick-up horse, ex-mustering horse for all my next-door cousins (oldest now 35), and ex-kids horse for my two whippersnappers.

(Old action pics here and here and here).

Now aged around 34 years  (approximately 103 in ‘horse years’ according to this formula) she is still with us, although requires some TLC to get her through the winters. She gets rugged every evening (and depending on the daytime temps, during the day too) and supplemented with lucerne hay and some horse pellets at least once a day.

Naturally, she is in full retirement, except for the odd effort required to coax some extra hay rations from gullible humans.

I reckon she looks pretty good for an Centurian Centerian hundred year old lady.  Eyes are a little weepy, hips a little more obvious, gait a little wobbly, but generally she is still bright, eating well and ‘with it’.

I know we cannot keep this up forever.  But for this year (fingers crossed) we are doing okay.

🙂

I did not know horses lived to be so old. She looks wonderful, so trusting and relaxed, and I am not a horse person. I hope you show her the ultimate kindness when the time comes.

She’s still lovely! When I first read “she gets rugged every evening” I pronounced it in my head as rug’ ged….thought you meant she looks peaked and rough at the end of the day. Then I realized it was just plain rugged – covered with a rug? Slow Yank here!

Look at those perked ears. She’s really just hoping you’ve got something delicous hidden in a pocket somewhere, isn’t she.

She looks amazing for her age.

    Remarkable old girl.
Reminds in her markings of a chestnut quarter horse (mare) that Dad in a moment of madness, I believe, bought for me as b/day present when I was about 6.(And that is way back!).
Princess, as she was called, was a “hell cat”. Many stockman tried, few stayed onboard for very long. I had one try and I think I was one of the first astronauts.
Princess, and she sure was no Princess!, was kept as a brood mare. Two foals were produced, even worse than their mother.
We gave her and her delightful unbroken offspring to an old drover. He reckoned he would tame the three of them.
I have no idea of what the outcome of this generous offer resulted in! Anyhow no tears were shed as the three “hell cats” were taken away.
I think your Lady Lacy was a far better mare. Many thanks for the memories, or should I say “nightmares” – ha ha.
    Great post.
    Cheers
