The Bush

Little Cowboy

Since forever, Dash has wanted to be a cowboy. Not that he has always loved horses… cause he has his wavery moments when he’d rather be pretty much anywhere than with a shetland who nips his nether regions! But once he’s on top he’s generally all systems go… And not that he always loves cows (or bulls) but he’s pretty cool from a safe vantage point on the fence…
And me? Well I’ve always thought Dash looks the part…
Specially from his vantage point on that fence… in his belted-up straw hat we bought almost three years ago, when we lived in the city.

That hat has seen us through many rodeos, campdrafts, shows and even survived a thousand faces like this. For the un-Dash-initiated, this particular look says: How long til smoko d’ya reckon?

The Mini Marlboro Man then fixes his Ma with the “when you gonna stop takin’ photos and get me some tucker” look!

And my all-time favourite: “You’re my best girl” look.
I’m a sucker for this one. Even with a trace of Vegemite on the jawline. Especially with a trace of Vegemite on the jawline…
What’s your favourite memory/image/moment of the youngest bloke/woman in your life??

Your Dash was made to wear a cowboy hat. What a cutie!

My favorite memory of my youngest son happened one morning when he was three. He ran into my bedroom and jumped into bed early in the morning. I opened my eyes to see him sitting under the covers grinning at me with one sleepy eye open and one closed. I don’t know why but I have never forgotten that sweet moment. He always wanted to make me happy. He has the same sweet personality 24 years later.

I remember when Dylan was just a little pippersqueak, and we had gone to see Peter Pan at the theater. He was all agog at the bigness of it. The next morning he came running into our bedroom, chattering away, and began to jump on the bed yelling, “I can fly, I can fly, I can fly…” I realized what was to happen seconds before it actually did, far too late to intervene. He actually thought that he could fly and sailed over the footboard, and hit the floor flat with a most awful thud.

The magic of the theater. For a moment there, one little fellow believed that he could fly.

My favorite moment changes every day! My Maeve's 9 now and she still insists I climb into her top bunk bed to hug & kiss her every night and says she'll ALWAYS love her mommy (even when she's 14). I think the most recent favorite is her getting up and dancing in front of the judges and the crowd at her first fesh. She was SO proud of herself. Why can't we freeze them at this age?

MBD – yes I do. That’s why I blog… to make these moments last a little bit longer (and to hear your reminiscences too!).

Katie in NY – your Maeve sounds gorgeous. Let’s hope when they are all adolescent and foul that they see these snippets and know how much we revelled in their childhoods! Freeze-frame!

debbie – I could see Dylan “flying” then thudding then. Poor darlin’. Doncha hate when the world intrudes on their dreams??

Jeanie – I KNOW!!! The amount this boy eats stuns me daily… I just hope if there is anyone reading this who has a tube-fed kid, they can take heart from his vegemite-smeared smile…

Steviewren – oh what a darling!! I’m glad he’s stayed wonderful – I hope my Dash does too. I think he will, his need to please and general loving nature is so evident… time will tell.

boy wanted to do something and bran wasn’t letting him. boy would’ve been about 4 years old at the time and only about mid-thigh height on bran. the two of them stood facing each other, hands on their hips and each totally determined that the other wasn’t going to get their way. boy was utterly fearless and of course it wasn’t long before bran melted like a blop of butter on a hot skillet.

He’s so cute, I’ll bet he could charm any female to make him a Vegemite sandwich.

My favorite memory is when son #3 was 5 years old and we were at a wedding for my cousin. He announced at our table that he was going to marry me when he got old enough. Everyone at the table started to laugh and he had no idea why.

The fun part is when relatives remind him that he’s going to marry his mom. Now that he’s 16 and has a great sense of humor he just says “or someone who cooks just like her.”

DW – I can so totally picture your boy facing off with Bran… I love it when they have a little spunk! Even if it is used against us mums at times!!!

Portia – I relate to this story big-time!!! Dash has also declared he wants to marry me… “but I love YOU Mummy” even when you explain that he will meet someone else to share his life with when he gets (much, much) bigger. I am so gonna miss this kind of devotion when it runs its course!!! I suspect I may be the mother-in-law from hell… heh heh!

Thanks so much for sharing guys – and if anyone else out there has their own story – I’d love to hear it too!!!
