Bush invaded by shellfish!
We live inland – about three hours drive from the nearest salt water.
One of the things SSB and I have had to adjust to (after moving here from a beachside locale) is the scarcity of seafood.
Or rather the scarcity of seafood my husband will accept as edible.
SSB likes his seafood FRESH and REFUSES to eat seafood more than an hour’s drive inland. It’s his golden rule.
Seriously.
…
The man is a foodie and soggy prawns just don’t do it for him.
Our son, who was tube-fed for the first year of his life, is a different matter.
Despite having the worst kind of eating issues as a baby, he appears to be making up for lost time in a big way. His appetite for new foods is astonishing. Amazing. Breath-taking. Fan-freaking-tastic.
…
In a strange and horrendous twist of fate, his little sister (who has no physical problems whatsoever) is the pickiest eater in history. OK, maybe not history. But the chances of getting new or unusual foods into her mouth are small. Remote. Almost non-existent. Her menu is cereal and butter sandwiches and spaghetti. It’s just not fair (wails her pathetic mother in a quavering voice). She couldn’t be surrounded by people more into their food. But she will not be influenced by anyone else. Her stubborness is legendary. I just wish she would use it for good instead of evil! Heh.

Anyway, the seafood van (filled with frozen ocean delicacies) made a special trip to Dash’s school last week. It sent my son into a frenzy. Dash became obsessed with getting something from it. Obsessed, I tell you. We heard nothing else (“Can we, can we, can we?) until SSB relented and said:
OK. One meal. But not fish. Something else.
Dash was ecstatic.
And this is what he chose…
Crabs.
Sandcrabs. Three of the orange shellfish.
Is it just me, or do crabs become very odd looking after about a minute of staring at them?

It’s those beady eyes!
Dash thought they were fantastic. Amazing.
See sister? This is a c-r-a-b.
See sister? This is a c-r-a-b.
This is a nipper. It moves. Yah!
But it won’t hurt-cha!
See – I can pick it up even. Wanna try?
*touch, touch, touch, touch*
*poke, poke*
*scratch, scratch*
Hmmmm…
(Oh My God. She touched it! Step one along the tortuous track of getting it to her mouth.)
Oh, would you like some CHEESE with that shellfish?
(Cracking myself up here folks!)
…
So SSB, Pagi, Dash and I saddled up at the kitchen bench for a meal of crab, salad and crusty bread rolls.
Messy but simple but delish!
Dash ate some and declared it “pretty good”.
I relished this little taste of the beach – a wee holiday for my tastebuds.
Pagi ate until his sides almost popped (there was too much, but he couldn’t waste any!)
Even SSB enjoyed. Quietly. Of course.
And TLW? Bread rolls are apparently delicious.
Ah well. Four out of five ain’t bad.
…
BB question: What is your favourite seafood and why?

Anything. ANYTHING from the sea. Especially Western Australian Crayfish (They HAVE to be caught and cooked in WA waters, there is nothing like them and no, the crayfish you get anywhere else is not the same). A close second is Moreton Bay bugs, from (tada) moreton bay again cooked in Moreton bay water.
And local Moreton or Mooloolaba prawns.
Yessss………………

Your Dash is a brave one, cause crabs are strange looking food. But oh so tasty!

Moreton Bay BUGS? Bugs? Really? Please tell me that’s a nickname… Then again i love shrimp and they are pretty bug-ish. This post made me drool!!! I love love love crap. I live in Utah…very far from the ocean. It stinks. Whenever i go visit family in Oregon (i go a lot) i gorge on crab. Yum yum yum. And salmon, crud i love salmon as well. And smelt…does it count if it’s from one of the Great Lakes? I used to live in Michigan and we had awesome smelt fry’s. As you can see i could go on and on about this subject. Suffice it say, i love seafood. If you could see me right now i would be grinning like your punks. A big cheesy, i-love-seafood grin. The End.

Hard shell crabs…soft shell crabs…crab cakes…crab salad…crab bisque…stop me before I chew my arm off. The closest thing we get to fresh seafood in New Mexico is frozen fish sticks. Blcch. But I used to live near the Chesapeake Bay, where crab was king. Sigh.

that last photo…that kind of smile on boy was called his “cheesy game-show-host grin”.
i’ve never had an issue with boy’s eating…unless you count him picking out the kidney beans from chili and throwing them at me when he was 2 (good thing he’s still alive). we managed to get him to eat more broccoli by calling it “dinosaur trees” watching him eat dinosaur trees was a sight in the dynamics of how fast can a 3 year old chew.
oh, favourite sea food. that would be east coast lobster (the one with the huge horking claw), followed by crab and then shrimp. alas, maritime lobster is ugly expensive here on the prairies. someday i’ll get to newfoundland, nova scotia, p.e.i. or new brunswick and eat my fill (though i’m not sure that’s possible)

Actually, we live inland too, and rarely eat out. Our fish is never fresh, unless Tim gets a steelhead (which is a lake salmon) or walleye. I will not eat the trout. He has serious catch and release pleas on that. (I’ve never had a local trout that has tasted like anything but dirt). If I have to pick a favorite seafood, it will probably be shrimp. Pan simmered in butter and garlic. My experience is limited.
My verification word is oution. Kind of close to ocean.
A Novel Woman
Oh, it’s East Coast of Canada lobster, baby, dipped in butter. Oh, unless you count Digby scallops, lightly sauteed so they’re crusty and brown on the outside, and sweet and tender on the inside.
Now I’m hungry and I think all I have in the house is Kraft Dinner.
