Weather wishes: join the dots

One thing I try not to do here on this blog is whinge too much…
It’s an unattractive look on me. I know this…
But I have to say that the heat and the dryness of the summer season has been getting to me a little… I hate having to pour water onto our lawn to keep it green. It’s necessary both as a decent fire break and to provide something a little relief for tired eyes (and softness on the feet) for the boys as they come home after a hard day out in the paddocks… but it does feel a little wasteful sometimes. Plus I spend half my day dragging sprinklers around our massive houseyard in an attempt to get the green circles of already-sprinkled lawn to meet up! It’s one endless colouring-in effort!

The heat has been full-on over Christmas – over 40 degrees Celcius most days. And the view outside has been fading from green to sepia brown, and the once-lush grass stiffening to more crispy texture. So each time clouds gather and threaten, we all look hopefully skywards (and at the online weather radars and forecasts) for some precipitation.
Yesterday, it tried to rain here at the house.
Wet dots sprinkled hopefully on the concrete…

And yet failed to meet up. Again.

I left the sprinklers running (I am getting very superstitious like that – clothes on the line, sprinklers running, showing I am not getting ahead of myself in anticipating the Big Wet!).

I tried not to feel too disappointed when the sprinkle from heaven stopped after a couple of minutes.

After all, some of our paddocks have recieved some decent rain in the past few days, and leucaena planting will begin shortly. But the house outlook is still brown-edged. My vege garden still thirsty. Is there anything sadder than a wilted lettuce?

Then this morning, it tried again…

And the dots began to join up…

And pool… and puddle… and I smiled.

Of course, in the “keeping it real” department, I should show you the wider view of this shot…

Horse poo, half-dead lawn and muddy footprints.

Reinforcing my already-stated outlook on life:

Crop the Crap Out.
Heh.

In case you are wondering, the sprinklers are still running but the drizzle has slowed.

Perhaps I need to add:

Don’t blog about the rain til it’s finished

to my list of superstitions?

Do you have any weather-related superstitions in your neck of the woods??

Winner of the pre-Christmas comp announced shortly… and you thought I had forgotten!

Can’t believe I’m right after Diane this time! Superstition – here in the US you would be out washing your beloved 4WD. Washing the car ALWAYS brings the rain!

Nancy, You got that right! We South Dakotans are always needing rain (especially west of the Missouri River). It never fails, wash the car, and the rain will come!

So glad you got some moisture BB, I hope you get more this week. 40 degrees is simply unbearable!

Last week we were praying it would stop raining.

Check my post from December 28. We had several feet of snow followed by warmer weather and heavy rains. Fortunately, we didn’t get water in our house but several of our neighbors did. We had gotten rid of the sandbags from our September flood just a few weeks before this happened. I’m superstitious about getting rid of sand bags, we should have kept them.

Mom L is sooo right. You want it rain round here, you wash your car. Never fails. The heat actually sounds a bit nice right now…but that’s because i have 4 feet of snow in the front yard 🙂 The summers in my high desert town in Utah are just like yours though. Brown lawns and lot’s of sprinkler moving!

Don’t kill a spider or it will rain.

Also, don’t put anything valuable on the floor of the basement because it will not only rain, the basement will flood.

We don’t want to jinx our rain either… or the w-i-n-d. Don’t mention its name or it’ll start to blow!

Jayne, Steviewren, Kate & Diane – I have added this motto to the sidebar! Just to keep y'all smilin…

Carol – I won't mention the w-i-n-d on your behalf!

Pam – sounds like you speak from experience! I'm off to kill a few spiders…

Kate, Lydia and Mom L – I think the car-washing works here too. I just hate doing it as it is a fruitless task regardless of whether it rains (dust or mud!).

Portia – floods aren;t good either. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to share the rain around where it's needed?

This works for me: Scan the skies, decide it won’t rain, and then wander off, leaving the windows open. It will begin to pour once you are too far from home to do a thing about the windows.

It isn’t always necessary to wash the car- just leave the t-tops out;top down;windows open. Helps if it’s a new car.
The best to you and yours in the new year-hope you have a bangin

I love your motto, I will abide by it faithfully!! It is so strange to me to read your blog about summer…it has been -35C to -40C here for the last few days and not warmer than -20C for the last few weeks. My weather superstition is that if you shovel, you’re just inviting more snow!! I truly enjoy your blog 🙂
