The Trouble with Danes
OK.
I have been having trouble visiting the Pioneer Woman lately.
Which means I have been there too often, with tears leaking down my cheeks.
It’s not her fault. Not really.
But she KEEPS putting these photos up of a stray dog that wandered into her yard, and it’s kinda breaking my heart here.
…
Because
Because
THIS DOG…
EXACTLY
like
Don’t you think??
…
It’s like he’s really spent the past two years traversing the Pacific and tramping across America to rock up and say g’day to me via P Dub. Of course, I am not so kooky as to actually believe that… but part of me wants to.
Is that too weird?
OK. Don’t answer!
But these are the thoughts that flit through my mind.
But these are the thoughts that flit through my mind.
And then I start reminiscing…
That’s the trouble with Danes.
They lollop on into your life, and it doesn’t matter if they are there overnight or for seven years, when they go they take a bit of you with them.
It sucks.
Please God …I want another one.

No wonder. Look at that stoic face.

Cosmo is so beautiful! I really want one. Danes are my dream dog. Them and Dobermans. Sigh. I think you should get another one right away so that i can live vicariously through you 🙂
Reddunappy
OH to bad its so far between you, just in case she doesnt find his owners 🙁

They have a lovely nature, go get another one, BB!

BB – maybe it’s time to get yourself another Dane. It’s what you want. Your children would love it.
WV is (I kid you not) pooing. You’ve thought of that, though, right? Great Danes probably make enormous messes in the yard. Of course, you’ve already got cattle and horses. I imagine that their messes are even bigger.

I am sorry that you miss your friend so much. Ours were two cats, Ghost & Mouse. Ghost played fetch & purred so loudly. Mouse was just the sweetest little tiny thing.
I'm w/ ya, BB. I want another one too.

When I saw the Great Dane on Pioneer Woman I immediately thought of you. What a wonderful way to bring back the memories of your Cosmo. Maybe it’s time…..

Cosmo was beautiful (dignified and full of patient understanding) and I think Deb is right. Perhaps its time to find yourself another Dane.
To seek out one of their “relatives” to come share our home and hearts, when we’re ready, is a tribute to how they affected our lives and changed us.
Perhaps you could work out the shipping with Pioneer woman? 🙂

I’ve been so-ooooo busy I haven’t been over to PW in a few days (shame, shame, I know. But I have been HERE, so what does that say? SEE, I told you!! wink-wink.) I’ll have to go check out the stray. But Cosmo is LOVELY! My friends have two Danes, one old peppered black one and a younger brindle. The youngest one is HUGE. Neither of them have their ears cropped, which is cool, I prefer the natural look. They are such fun dogs with so much personality. I really loved your black and white photos!

I am sorry for your tears and for your aching heart. The really great loves are like that. My mother waited a good 5 years after her beloved dog passed away, but eventually felt ready for another of the same breed. She did choose the opposite sex though, and this helped, because there was no way her new rowdy boy resembled the perfect girl who had passed away. Same breed with the same wonderful traits, but with such different personalities! My mother never felt she was replacing her old friend, just lucky enough to enjoy getting a new one! That is my wish for you, that one day you can welcome in a new love in the form of a new great dane! Blessings!
A Novel Woman
Well, of course you should get another one. Talk about the perfect place to raise one. He’ll just blend in with the horses.
I remember this neighbour who walked a glossy black Dane. She used to make all his food herself, cooking up all the meat and veg etc., and he was literally so shiny you could almost see yourself in his coat. While she chatted, he’d come up against me and just lean gently, with so much gentle strength. I loved the solid warmth of this dog.

Oh – I’m sorry – but I agree – it’s time to move on. You should really look at getting a new family member.

There was a Great Dane who used to be on the oval sometimes when we were there. He was so intimidating and big that I thought he’d eat us all up. His nickname was Gentle Ben so of course he was just a pussycat. Unfortunately he died – he was pretty old.
Bush Babe
I know I know… I’m sick of me whining too! I am building up to it, but you are right Amber… perhaps a different gender or colour. No dog could ever really be another Cosmo.
*sniff*
Thanks for your support!!

Your Cosmo is breathtaking! And I know exactly how you feel. We had Lillian for 4 years until cancer took her from us a month ago. My heart hurts every day for her. She was the best animal I have ever known.
Thanks for the sweet comment. xo

That photo with Cosmo profile and Dash is one of the most wonderful I have ever seen. I have wanted a dane since my childhood, but have never felt I had the space to do one justice. Now, being in the Great Smoky Mountains may be the time. I know your pain, BB. You’ll know when the time is right.

Oh so much of your blog drew me in…..BUT when I came to this story of Cosmo, you had my heart. My Son,who is now 36(!!) always begged for a Dane! I assured him that when he had his own home he could surely have one! Little did I know that I'd be there too.But that's anothr story…we are all believers of Rescue Pets so he indeed found Zeus,a big Fawn Dane in a shelter & drove 200 miles to pick him up! My Son was going thru a trying time inhis life & Zeus was the medicene he needed. They were insepartable! Sadly, the tough econimic times, took his job & he was forced to move where he couldn't keep his beloved Zeus.He somehow, found a way to not be in town when it was time for Zeus to go,I know my Son,it's how he handles to much hurt.Zues was able to go to the Great Dane Rescue, a wonderful place for Danes, maybe you can find your nextDane there! They sure do grab yor heart. But so does my PUG…..oh but that's another story……
