Help our hues!

I did a family photo shoot on the weekend (yes, in amongst all that campdrafting).
Luckily they are good friends of ours and didn’t seem to mind in the least that we smelled like dust and horses and sweat. And they even failed to notice that my makeup had slid to below shirt level to be replaced by grime and that lovely shine that olive-skinned people get after a long hot day.
At least, they didn’t point it out!
That’s what friends are for…
Amongst the images was this one I took during our late afternoon shoot.
Isn’t it peaceful?
It was one of those ‘in the moment’ things…
We were getting ready to shoot the ‘walking up the road towards the photographer’ thing when one of the older kids called out to me.
‘Quick, he said, take a shot of Dad and B’
(B is the littlest man of their four very cute children)
I lifted the Nikon and shot off one frame.
Just one.
I could analyse it to death, but instead I’ll just say that (to me) this photo says:
Father and son.
Big and small.
Present and future.
Nuff said.
Luckily, our friends love the shot too,
but there is one dilemma
Black-and-white or colour?
Thoughts please, people…
we need some help!

I like it both ways. I’d get one of both done up for different places. If they only want one, I’d pick depending upon where they’re going to put it and what else they’re going to put it with. It’s a great photo!

Hi, I found you while stalking The Pioneer Womans comments…..I do love your site & I have to say while both pictures say different things to me,I think I have to say the B&W…because it says more…more things to thin about while looking at it….it gives it even more depth. It's a truly beautiful shot!

I like the black and white a bit better…seems like a photo that is timeless, one that could have been taken anytime in the past couple of centuries.
    It is a touching picture

I like them both but if I had to choose, I’d choose colour. No wait, black and white because it really is a timeless shot. But then, the colour one has a bit of a faded 70s vibe. But b/w is classic….

    Black and white.

And I’d have a look at what cropping out the trees on the right would do for the shot. If you follow the rule of thirds, the subjects might be better placed and they still head off down the road on the other 2/3 of the shot. I always try a lot of cropping just to play around. Sometimes it’s better, sometimes it’s not.

Nice shot in any case. I love how they both have their right feet raised at the same time.

Thanks so much guys… I really wish I could make the images bigger on this site. So you could judge the detail a little better…

Jenni – this is what I would do!!! Hah. Who needs to choose anyway…

Linda – welcome!! You join a select group of PW stalkers here – heck I started this darned blog because of that woman! I see what you mean about the monotone… hmmm

CJS – yes, exactly! It could be 100 years ago, for sure. Except that this Dad is younger than me, so that would make me.. one hundred and forty two years old. No wonder I am tired…

PAm – I had that exact conversation in my own head just before I posted! You must’ve been eavesdropping… I have actually done the crop you advise and depending on what shape image they choose, it could well go that way. If you look really closely, you can see the shadow of their joined hands between them on the dirt.

I usually love black and white… but for some reason, the color one is calling to me more. I think it's the lighting (time of day?) and the shadows. It is subtle and just has more depth and emotion to me in color. That being said, I like the b&w one too and if I'd never seen the color one, would probably like it more if that makes sense? 😉 Have a great weekend!

I like them both! Yes, B&W is really timeless and very special – I usually like B&W best. But the color (notice the Yank spelling!) version seems more alive.

I really like the b & w but this time I have to go w/ the color. And when you have it right one shot is all you need!

  • Woman in a Window

I usually go for the black and white but the colours are so subtle in the first shot, so soothing, I think I’ll go with that one. Plus the dappled light rocks!

Sorry I’m late. I usually like the black and white best, but this time, I think that there is too much shadow…it overwhelms in the black and white photo. In the color picture it accents, beautifully.

I like the colour one, actually. I feel it shows great use of light and shade. (Or maybe I am just a softie and like the colours).

  • Gem

I am loving them both – but I would have to go for the colour – there’s too much black in my life at present!!! And that’s saying something because I would usually pick a b/w over a colour pic in a flash!

  • Bush Babe

Wow… seemed to be even stevens there for a while, but colour getting the votes as we head to the finish line!!!

    Thanks y’all…
