Horses

Name this foal: the contest

Righto.
The time has finally come.
Is your imagination ready for a workout?

You may have forgotten our gorgeous Stock Horse foals, born here at Granite Glen just before Christmas? Here is a quick refresher for late starters and those with a memory like mine

There was Cutestuff #1 (a bay colt)...

And CuteStuff #2 (a chestnut filly)

who I managed to photograph within an hour of birth

They were born within a day of each other, both by the same Daddy, the amazing Admiral.
(God rest his gentle chestnut soul).
As I explained at the time, when pressed on names, only one of these delightful fluffy equine beings is ours.
The little filly belongs to a gent from up north who will one day come and claim his little chestnut filly and dam back. There will be a couple (maybe more than a couple) of sets of sad brown eyes when that happens, I can tell you…
Then there is this guy.
He’s quite a character.
Strong right from the start.
Not really gentle like his much-missed old man…

The colt has been wary and cautious with people initially…

He has calmed down a lot from his first couple of handling, but showed plenty of spunk each time. The little filly needed some surgery at one stage, and he fretted a lot while she was being treated (about a 3 week period) and got quite naughty.

The little blighter even tried to nip and kick me on a couple of occasions.
Cheeky brat!
Of course, once she was OK and back in the paddock with him, he calmed down.
They are inseparable, these two…

Often hiding out in the long grass together…
But the whole “Cutestuff #1 and #2” thing has gone far enough.

We need a proper name for them…
I cannot promise that the filly will get to keep hers, but if your suggested moniker gets the thumbs up from Mr Incredible, the colt could wear a name of your choosing!
And if you feel like throwing a name in for his half-sister, please do so.
We might as well have a proper handle for her while she’s visiting!
You can win your favourite horsey photo from anywhere on this blog,
and the lifelong honour of naming a horse!
(I promise not the be offended if the latter tickles you more than the former.)
The vital facts:
Sire: Admiral
Dam: Jill
Grandsire: Cadet (a famous Australian Stock Horse)
Nature: bossy and naughty and cute
Colour: bay
Markings: a crooked white star on forehead and two white socks
(and weirdly bendy knees…check out above pic closely!)

Alrighty… let me have it.

I’ll leave this open for a few days to gather ideas, and post up the winner mid-week-ish.
Gosh I’m precise and organised.
It really is a wonder I don’t home-school.*
Hugs
BB
*serious sarcastic overtones for those who missed it!
ENTRIES CLOSED – WINNER ANNOUNCED OVER THE WEEKEND!
Thanks for playing…

How about Admiral Bohanon (pronounced bowhanon). A bit regal, a tribute to dad, manly, and spirited. You could call him Beau

  • Marty52

How about Captain Jack for the colt and Moira or Maureen for the red-headed little filly? This is my first time commenting so I just want to say I love your blog and the glimpse of bush life you give to us all. Thanks!

  • Andrea

OH naming foals is so much fun!! We have one over here that is still nameless!! I just can’t find a name that we all like. I will have to think on this for a bit and come back over here later!! Do you want a registered name or are you looking for a barn name?

  • Mom L

I really like Cactus Jack's offering of Beau! For the little filly? For some reason Tally just came to mind. Remember, I'm still in a daze over human baby names for D&D of "Mayberry" fame!!!

  • Wrensong Farm

I have a heck of a time naming my OWN animals….but I am going to give this one some serious thought. Still want to hang a Bush Babe print on my wall! 🙂

  • Wrensong Farm

    OK…..some names to start with….

I thought he should have a nod to his greatly missed father…so I wanted to include Admiral in his name….

I also wanted something Aussie…but not sure if some of the terms are appreciated or not by people that actually live there so that’s up to you….no offense meant by any of the offerings!

Admirals Ace (how could he not be?)

Admirals Dux (top of the class…once again how could he not be?) 🙂

    Going on his naughty side….

    Admirals Larrikin

    Admirals Bushranger

    Just some regular ‘ol names…..

    Admirals Rascal

    Admirals Mischief

    Admirals Reflection (Image)

Admirals Chip (Chip off the old Block)

    Admirals Facsimile (Fax)
    I’ll keep on thinking…..

  • Deb

You’ve got a ton of great options already 🙂

I’ll chime in with mine for the young fellow:

    Admirals Star Cadet

still thinking for the filly 🙂

  • Pencil Writer

Having neither owned or named a horse before, I may fall very flat at this! But, the first name that came to mind after looking at the newest pic’s, is Browned Butter. His coat is very brown and slick looking, and thinking of some of his personality traits you’ve mentioned, you could think of someone being a little over zealous in their endeavors to speed up cooking something.

Okay. Not so great. But, then, my brain . . .

  • Rose

Yaaay! A name contest! I think I may have even suggested this back when you first posted pictures?? I dunno, but I do remember suggesting a name then and I’ll re-submit it now for a chance to win one of your fantastic prints! I like the name Akimbo, because of the crooked white markings on his forehead and it kind of makes me think of his weirdly bendy legs at the same time! Thanks 😉

  • Gem

OK – I have been thinking very hard!
Names that came to mind as I gazed at those cute little foals.

    Boys –

    Cracker jack
    Char do neigh (ha Ha)
    Comanche
    Copper glow
    Clancy
    Brumby

    Girls –

    Amber Star
    Misty Gal
    Misty Babe
    Bella Babe
    Belle of the Bush
    Irish Mist
    Celtic Rose
    Cinders

That’s all I got for now – but I reserve the right to re enter later after I have had a couple of more glasses of water – I mean wine!!!

    Little Man:
    Jack Frost
    Destiny
    Fortune

    Little Lady:
    Vanessa
    Carol (as in Christmas)
    Lila or Lyla

    Here’s why:
what i’m thinking might not make sense to you bush people but play along anyway. loving the christmas theme b/c of their birthday’s and the first song that pops into my head is “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire“..
CHESTNUTS GET IT? so one line is “Jack Frost nipping at your nose”

Jack Frost for the little man.

then “Yule-tide carols being sung by a choir”

Carol for the girl. or my personal human favorite at the moment Lila or Lyla.
or i just read this: “admiral-any of several often brightly colored butterflies of the family Nymphalidae, as Vanessa atalanta (red admiral).”
    VANESSA!

and there is a 5-star admiral- and little man has a star: STAR- “a person’s destiny, fortune, temperament, etc., regarded as influenced and determined by the stars.”… I Love DESTINY!

  • Kate

Okay i really like ‘Admiral’s Finale’ for for the colt. Cuz he is Admiral’s Finale. You could call him Fin. Say it out loud a few times, it grows on ya 🙂

I’m having a harder time with the fillies name…

  • Debby

I can’t believe that no one said it already.

Captain. The way you all abbreviate everything over there, he’d immediately become ‘Cap’ or ‘Cappy’. Captain. It goes with Cadet, and Admiral. It doesn’t sound like you’re big on long regal sounding names, but if you need a second name, I’d say Captain Jack (get it? Jack is a nod to his mother, Jill. Jack and Jill…)

  • Anonymous

I’m a first time poster too – nothing like a competition to get the thinking cap going!

    How about –

    Admirals’ Star Trooper
for the late great Admirals’ last colt
    and

    Gingerly (Ginger-lee?) Admiral
    for the little filly.

    Cheers Wendy

  • Debby

Oh. I am SO sorry! I see that I guessed the same as Marty. (Good answer Marty.) I think that Marty should win. Sorry, again!

  • Reddirt Woman

    Bushwhacker…

Or Admiral Bushwhacker if you want to add a nod to his old man… But from your description my first thought was “why that ornery little bushwhacker!”

And for the filly HeartSong… Don’t ask why, it just popped into my head when I read about how he settled down when she was back in the paddock with that little guy. I feel for him and whoever has to handle him whenever the fellow who owns her and her mom comes and takes them away.

  • Pony Girl

I really liked “BOB” myself,LOL! 😉 Silly Gramps!
Actually, Kate’s “Admiral’s Finale” was a great suggestion!
He is so handsome. I so like keeping Admiral in the name. I’ve added nicknames, too, you know me, it’s so in my nature to nickname everything!

    How about….

    “Admiral’s Shadow” {Shad or Shadow}
    “Admiral’s Deja Vu” {Deja}
    “Incredible Admiral” {Indy. I had to throw in Incredible since YOUR nicknames are all from that family…. ;}

Anyway, good luck, you have lots of great ideas!

  • Nikker

Admiral’s Call of Duty is my first thought, don’t know what the barn name for that could be…maybe Ammo! LOL!! Love the blog! Thank you for sharing!!

  • Danielle Michelle

Going with both the sire and grandsire’s military influence in name choice…

Why not keep it simple and call him Sargeant, or Gunny (short for gunnery)?

  • Hippomanic Jen

I liked (Admiral) Nelson as Heather suggested – how could she suggest it before me – but there are plenty of other good suggestions, too.

You wouldn’t mind if I kidnapped him, would you? He’s just so gorgeous and I haven’t had a horse for SOOOOO looong. I really need that horsey smell on my hands, that soft, warm furry feeling (and horsey snot on my clean top – it’s all coming back).

Now I have to go and pat the dog – it’s not the same, but…

  • Bush Babe

Holy Moses… my biggest comp ever!! You guys rock… what an amazing array of names.

I am leaving this open a little longer (til morning GG time) then I will sit down with Mr I and make a decision (ie HE will make a decision!).

Thanks everyone for putting their brains to work! In the meantime, have some birthday cake with Dash!
    🙂
    BB

  • Katie

I’m thinking Brush. I don’t have a good explanation for it but I’m fairly sure that’d be my choice (if it were my choice!)

  • jules

    Colt:
    – Admiral’s Prize
    – Peace Admiral (Petey for short. Harking back to US racehorses War Admiral, isn’t it a good time for Peace?)

    Filly
    – Admiral’s Grace (Gracie)

Please keep us up to date with these fabulous classy baby horses! (I love their chunky bums hee)

  • Lydia

There are a gazillion good ideas here, and these may have been suggested already.

    I have

    Private Star
    or
    Captain Star

No ideas for the little lady, however. Unless it would be Little Lady…. heh…
