Seeking a sepia series…or not?

Ever just messed with something,
decided that you loved it,
and then (feeling rather chuffed with yourself)
attempted to recreate it,
and just couldn’t quite remember how you did it?
Happens to me all the time
This is a shot I took of Violet recently…
I love this image with her hair all mid-swing and the background all lovely and bokeh,
and I ran a little sepia Photoshop action on it.
And VOILA.
Violet from 100 years ago.
Well, as good as…
I adore sepia.
Have I confessed this before?
Those who are regularly here will probably have guessed.
Photos. Old Stuff. Sepia. Natch.

So I thought I would do a little Sepia Series…
all lovely matchymatchy sepia images from all over my hard drive.
Sepia windmills…
Sweet before-and-after gnarly dead-tree roots against the sky…
Hmmm….

And I would swing on by, back to the swing set…
Do you see my problem here?
All exactly the same action.
All amazingly DIFFERENT results.
Of course, if you aren’t into matchymatchy,
and the inner-gizzard workings of Photoshop,
you probably couldn’t care less.
You very likely tuned out at the start of this post,
and just looked at the pictures!

So my question… More sepia?
Anyone.
And if so… why??

Yep, more sepia and hunt out those clearing sales or those old 'retired' farm vehicles/machinery, etc too, they'd work a treat in sepia.
Sepia gives so much depth and character to a shot where everyday hues and brightness can be just that bit too harsh and can lose some of the finer details that sepia brings to the fore.
    If that makes sense? lol

I love sepia, but I especially love the huge, happy smiles on all the kids' faces (I'm including Mr. I in the kid category).

I LOVE sepia. Especially in the shots of the kids and the dead roots. It just makes photos so warm and vintage and full of emotion. More sepia please!

I just, miraculously, managed to take a beautiful shot of my brother and sister-in-law and I used PW's sepia action and it just made the image amazing. i'll put it on my blog soon, after i give it to them first.

Hmm, I can see what your talking about, but I PLAY with Photoshop and WORK with Illustrator. So I'm not sure how to make things match. A lot has to do with the original photo and the contrasts. Maybe adjust them before the sepia with Image-Ajust-Curves. Unfortuately, there are so many variables that a nice match could take a lot of tweeking. The photos all by themselves are gems. You blog is always a pleasure to visit.

I heart the sepia, but when I do it, it comes out with a strong yellow or even green/yellow cast. Yuckity boo. But my black and whites end up slightly green too. Maybe it's my camera. Yup, always blame the camera.

Nice shots! I'm at my cottage all summer so I won't be around as much until Sept. Cheers!

lol… Ok I confess.. I was only half reading and mainly just looking at the pictures. Then I caught the line "You probably tuned out at the beginning of the post…" and read it a couple of times before it registered.
I went back to the start and read it properly then lol
I don't mind sepia for a change.. But I really love colour.
As for the photoshoppping – I have been known to get a result with no idea how I got there, and then click "undo" a gazillion times to de-code it.

I think sepia is good when you are making a point with your picture. Dramatic touch to highlight something about a picture. It doesn't work on everything.

BB Guess what. That there photo shop everyone talks about? IT'S ON MY NEW COMPUTER! I haven't opened it yet. I was so surprised to find it there, that really, that's enough for now….

    Jayne – perfect sense…
Mom L – ha! How right you are…
RDA – thanks… I might just do that!
Kate – look forward to seeing it soon.
Lydia – I agree. Just why the variation??
Leenie – awww, thanks!! And I must get some Illustrator lesson soon too…
Pam – not sure I can blame the camera. Just the operator! Have fun for summer!
    Alison – Ha! gotcha… thanks for re-reading!
Debby – as soon as you look, your life as you know it will be over. Just sayin'… Heh.
