Duststorm – extreme weather watch
Weather has been making the news here again… in a new and freaky format.
We were trying to film a promotional video for Brangus cattle here yesterday, when it hit.
It. Dust.
A massive duststorm.
We were trying to film a promotional video for Brangus cattle here yesterday, when it hit.
It. Dust.
A massive duststorm.
It has affected most of eastern Australia – that’s bigger than big.
It’s freaking atrocious!
I feel ill thinking about the precious topsoil being lost from our land in this storm.
And I also feel ill about the footage we failed to get because of this phenomenon.
Deadlines suck.
…
Here it is moving in from the west about midday yesterday.

Doesn’t look like much yet…
Please ignore the shrek swamp that is our pool… Sven is working on it!
And please ignore the stained, falling-down fence… it’s historical, OK?
…
And NOT awesome for filming footage of anything.
The light dimmed and a surreal moon-like sun hovered over our shed…
The suddenly sepia outlook to the north …
There should be a river bed and funny little knob and hills and blue sky looking north-west…

not brown haze. YUK!
…
It was a recipe for early beers and other close-to-the-house activities.
With this pair…
Two of my best girls (and fellow photographers, seen here sporting emu feathers and a whip… yeah I have no idea what they were up to either!). These chicks are also the major reasons I have been blog-slack over the past few days… they are bracing themselves for the avalanche of protests from y’all.

Or else they just drove off – oblivious – into the sunset.
One of the two.
…
This afternoon the dust – unlike my gal pals – is still hanging around like an unwanted guest.
A bad smell… a bad smell/unwanted guest playing havoc with my allergies.
*honk!*
So I have a leaky face and the sun looks like a moon.
I might go back to bed now.
Is 3pm too early to say ‘g’night’?
…
What weather phenomenon have you been experiencing this week?

Okay, there. BB. Weather-wise, we can't top that. For which I am everlastingly grateful.

Haven't had wind for a while. That gritty-crud-in-the-nose-and-eyes-feeling…don't miss it. Ever. Best wishes for quick end of it.

No dust storms here in Michigan, just high humidity! Yuk! Everything damp and sticky though the temps are only in the 70's. I've actually had the air conditioning on the past two days just to get the dampness out of the carpeting and furniture. A cool down is expected in the next few days with lower temps and humidity, followed by a rainy weekend and high's only in the 60's next week. Summer is truly over. I'm hoping for an "Indian Summer" with the changing colors of the leaves.

That's so crazy. Hope all is going well for you up in the NE. It's freezing cold and windy in Freo..as to be expected.

Rain last week. Saw the sun Saturday afternoon. Had a beautiful day Sunday and Monday until late afternoon, then while driving home we had to duck under an overpass for about 5 minutes while the hail along the gust front came down with the rain. Then we drove the rest of the way home in light rain. Yesterday and today was wonderful. Cooler (50ies in the morning to low 70ies during the day), nice early fall weather.

Snow. Ice in the stock tanks. Hard frost that killed all the veggies left in the garden.
And a beautiful afternoon of blue skies, fluffy white clouds, crisp fall air and a high temp of 55F.
Not much dust here.

I have been naughty and updated this post a little… suffering post-mates-visiting exhaustion so first effort was a little lacking. No promises on the updates. Things a little hazy both inside AND outside my hayfever-ridden head!

I can feel the sinuses clogging up, headache appearing. Still a bit hazy here today. I was out gardening and thought it was time to come inside and I had only cleaned my wooden ventian blinds two days before!!!

Our entire summer in the middle of the USA has been cooler than usual. July was the coolest July on record for the past 137 years. August was only the 6th coolest of the 137. Unusual. But nice. Nicer than a dust storm, that's for certain!!!

Pretty cool here — feels like fall in the Dakotas.
I saw footage of your dust storm — how crazy was that! Hope your allergies settle down to a tolerable level.

Just looking at your photos makes me cough and my eyes burn!!! Lovely here in Iowa – a bit cloudy, but feeling like Fall with a current temp of 62F. I'm just grateful I left Atlanta – I've been following their frightening flooding through emails and phone calls with friends and Facebook comments.

How cool! Or, how dusty! I've never seen anything like that!
I'm from Pennsylvania in the US and it's unseasonably warm but sort of dreary in an "I'm about to rain on your hair and make it frizz like crazy" sort of way.

The "Grapes Of Wrath" Aussie edition. No protests about your beer girls, kinda like the whip. Hope you get more topsoil then you lose.

I saw a comment you left at Pioneer Woman this morning and I came over to say hi! I LOVE your pictures. So pretty. And my favorite one of all is the one with your friends. Good friends are one of lifes great blessings : )

I'm stepping out of the shadows to say 'hello'. I have been following your blog for a few months now, and it very quickly became one of my favorites!
The weather here this week was unseasonably warm which was great as our crops are late and we still have lots of crop to harvest. +25 Celsius, lots of sunshine. Apparently this is to change after the weekend.

My name is Mike and my baby sister is Kelly. My blog is Mike's Weather World and I must say I was quite impressed with the Australian dust storm. Every few years we have dust blow in from Texas and Oklahoma when the conditions are just right….but nothing like that storm. Kelly says I should check your blog on occasion for weather info down under.

That gritty taste is just lovely, isn't it! Most bizarre thing I have seen for a while.

Had to drop back by and acknowledge my new commenters… gives me a major buzz to know people I know (and those in the wide blue yonder) take the time to drop by and check out my little corner of the world. Thanks Audrey, Mike and 'Life with Kaishon', Robin and Whitesone too… sweet to meet you!!
And Rhubarb – we managed to miss most of the second storm (small blessings!) but my head is still clogged from the first bout. Not a fan, I can tell you!
Bigheaded Bob – been waiting for someone to ask about the whip!!!
