Cheer ups: floral or fridge-magnet funny?
So, there’s been some ‘cheering up’ needed a fair bit round here lately… I won’t go into details (you can thank me later) but there seems to be a rash of excrement hitting various fans in our neighbourhood.
So I have been wondering, what’s the best thing to do when a friend is feeling a bit down in the mouth?
Would you:
A) Offer up some flora – along with some sensitive, happy, gentle thoughts?
It’s a nice safe thing to offer… unless the recipient has hayfever, I suppose.
Or,
B) Aim straight for the funny bone (after all – laughter is supposed to be the best medicine)
… Something more along these lines for a friend in need:
NB All wisecracks stolen from fridge magnets gifted to me by my darling sister – I have quite a collection!
For some reason Mr Incredible doesn’t really appreciate this one, the way I thought he might…
Each of these magnets crack me up… but THIS one (to me) is rib-ticklin’, in-your-face funny!
Fair dinkum … it almost caused me to snort my coffee right out of my nose.
So – I wonder – what really works for the person at the other end of this blog?
What cheers you up when you are feeling blue? What would YOU DO?
Floral or funny?

I have some that were on sale at a local shop on the side of my fridge for when the right person/right moment is required.
“Out of 2 evils, I always chose the one covered in whipped cream”
“If you want breakfast in bed, sleep in the kitchen”
“I will not obsess! I will not obsess! I will not obsess!”
One I received for my birthday (guess where it is from) – “Kiwis – next 1600 km”
I want to know how powerful a fridge magnet has to be to create hayfever?

Ok this one needs a bit of background. I collect fridge magnets from places I go to. Last year, I attended a conference at Maropeng, a homonid archeological site outside Johannesburg. So, on the fridge magnet I picked up has two images on it. One of a hominid skull, the other, a modern skull. Each has been divided into sections like “food” “sex” etc. Both have large areas dedicated to “sex”. The caption underneath says “Illustration of male evolution”.
My other half doesn’t think it’s all that funny, though he does not dispute it’s accuracy!

Hmmm, My GFs and I go for pedicures when one of us is feeling particularly blue.
I would cover my fridge in funny magnets and children’s art work, but it’s one of those stainless steel models—magnets don’t work.
I was given a magnet recently by my sister—“I base most of my fashion taste on what doesn’t itch.”~Gilda Radner.

Really – thought my fridge was stainless steel too. But it is so covered in magnets and school paraphenalia I cannot truly remember! A pedicure… NOW we are talking.

Bush Babe! You pose some very difficult questions for so early in my morning!!! I love flowers, absolutely, real fresh ones, and lovely pictures of them–as in your gorgeous hibiscus featured here! But funny statements, hmmmm! Gotta have ’em, too, to lift a somber note to a happier one. Conundrum . . . Soooooooo, do you happen to have any cute, funny fridge magnets with lovely flower pictures? Jeannie?
I know. I’m absolutely of no help in this area. 🙁
Laura
I know a little humor and a hug go along way to cheering me up when I am down. I say go for the funny!
Heather
I love flowers, but when I’m feeling down I need the funny. Helps me see there is more to life than the problem bogging me down.
Kelly
Between your two choices I’d pick funny. Not that I don’t think flowers are wonderful, but there’s something very healing about humor.
I have a large collection of fridge magnets – my favorite souvenier when traveling – so most of mine are “places”. I do have a few funny ones, though. This one suits me:
‘No outfit is complete without dog hair’
gramps
I agree with most of the Lady commentors—humor is the way to go. Damn, how do you spell commenters??????
Bush Babe
GRAMPS!! You made it over here… thanks for commenting – and I go for the second spelling version (if that helps?)

Oh, always go straight for funny, IMHO. There is no problem so big that you don’t feel better for a good laugh. Refrigerator magnets? Who knew. I have quite a collection of pins. My favorite says, ‘the secret to my success is my sincerity. Once I learned how to fake that, I had it made.’

I like both – I’m no help really. I am a fan of the 1950s housewife-with-sarcasm ones…. I’ve got one on my fridge that says “If the kids are still alive at 5… I’ve done my job”.
I’ve also got quite a lot of arty-farty ones as well … my favourite arty-farty ones are from here: http://www.etsy.com/listing/38541973/set-of-4-art-magnets

OK, that last comment was me … not really incognito … more just plain forgetful….
Jayne
Definitely go the humour route, even a smirk or a giggle (or a snort) loosens the tension and makes things seem a little better.
The 50s housewife ones are a fav here, too lol.

It depends on the nature of cheering to be done. Really serious life & death issues, definitely floral.
Everything else, funny.
Sometimes when the fan is dispersing (it never is spread around equally), both are required.

what cheers me up? well, there’s always chocolate…i especially like chocolate covered peanuts. sushi is also a good way of cheering me up. and comics. i especially like Devil’s Panties and Questionable Content. and chocolate.
Naomi
that should be Devil’s Panties
Bush Babe
Thanks Naomi – loving your avatar too!!

Definitely funny fridge magnets. It kind of depends what the problem is as to what is the best thing for it. But I’m sure you’ll get it right.

I’ll take the flora (I see I am in the minority) or better, a plant – it lasts. I don’t like fridge magnets. In other people’s homes, cool, but in mine – no. So, I always knew I was weird.
Bush Babe
My point was not so much the magnet as the humour… some very funny sayings, doncha think? P’raps you are more of a sayings-in-the-sidebar chick?

Funny….I left a comment here yesterday, but it’s nowhere to be found!
Anyway…. I vote humor. I think it’s the best medicine for everything. One of my favorite fridge magnets reads: “no outfit is complete without doghair”
J
Humour!
Laughs with a gang of girlfriends…the best ever!
My favourite fridge magnet:
My greatest fear is that there is no PMS snd this is my personality!
Bush Babe
Oh gawd… am starting to make a list!

I love funny magnets. You’ll enjoy this site: http://annetaintor.com/allproducts.html?sub=Magnets
