Randomness – the last instalment
This post was supposed to go up last night.
But I have a yukky cough and decided that I needed bed more than I needed my blog fix. It’s always a tussle for me, that choice. You can tell by the bags under my eyes which one wins most often!
Anyway, where was I?
Oh yes… random images from a day in the life of BB.
I found this snap among the details of work during out preg test.
And I guess it really one of the most IMPORTANT jobs when handling cattle is all to do with this:
The chain around the gate.
I suppose this might seem like a small thing to some – a simple detail – but when you have just spent several days sorting cattle, the chain on the gate is the most vital part of the whole operation. And if you have ever worked with men on a cattle (or sheep or whatever livestock) property, you will know one thing above all others. If something goes awry (say, the gate not being chained properly and two days worth of sorting being mixed up) then it had better be SOMEONE ELSE’s fault. Any girls out there know of what I speak?
Not that I left anything unchained. I’d just like that on the record. But someone (who was not me) apparently did not secure a gate properly during weaning recently … and a hundred or so young freshly-seperated-from-their-mothers cattle got out. Back in the paddock with their mothers. It weren’t pretty. I was very pleased I wasn’t there when that open gate was discovered by the menfolk. I let them sort that out amongst themselves. (I was possibly blogging at the time.)
According to reports, NOBODY was taking responsibility. Personally, I think the calves might have learned to open gates themselves. In the pitch-black of night. Up on their hind legs, fiddling with the chain with their front hooves. Yep. That’s it. After all, our cattle are pretty smart.

Oh no – did you happen to look to your left and notice any little blue clouds in that direction when it was discovered?
Come to think of it, Mr Nobody was busy in the 70s in that neck of the woods – perhaps he is making a comeback!!

Yeah, if the critters can open the grain chute – or whatever that mischief was – they can unchain a gate! A human would NEVER be that careless!!!

BB, I have no doubt assessment of the data (?) is most likely the accurate one. You do have very smart cattle–of all ages. The end.
