Daydream believer…
I have a son. His name is Dash… okay, his name is not REALLY Dash, but for the purposes of this blog and to his many fans, he is the artist formerly known as Master Incredible.
My son is a gorgeous thing (and yes, I am an unashamedly biased Mum) he is skinny and sensitive, yet all testosterone and wrestling-with-other-little-boys. He has the longest fingers I have ever seen, and adores the piano. Yet he can crack a whip like a little demon and wants to play for the Wallabies more than anything in the whole wide world.
He’s also a dreamer. Seriously, the kid lives in a bubble. A daydreaming, chat-to-himself kind of alternate universe. It’s sweet, as long as you aren’t trying to get him to do homework, or concentrate on pretty much ANYTHING. And as much as I’d love to go all military on him and demand he get that whole routine thing happening, I suspect he gets his little dose of dizziness from me.
The kid can find twenty different shapes in a cloud. (No, seriously. He’ll name and explain as you gaze upward and what is clearly an everyday whisp of atmosphere.)
This shot was taken as we chatted with friends during smoko on a paddock drive over the school holidays. Dash was catching tadpoles. Or something. I’m not sure, as I was focussing the camera on those incredible fingers of his… we really are a pair, aren’t we?
I bought him a set of modelling clay at the supermarket the day after. Within a couple of minutes of opening it, he’d created this:
A magpie.
I was mesmerised. The creation was miniscule but detailed… it was the eyes, I think, that really got me. No-one has ever shown him how to draw or create birds’ eyes. That is one cool wall-eyed cartoon-like magpie.
I don’t know what he’s going to be, this first-born of mine.
But I suspect ‘arty-farty’ might be in the title there somewhere..

I am thinking that perhaps he got some artistic talent from his mom….

I grew up with modeling clay as my main and favorite toy. Okay, mud and crayons ran a close second. I thought everyone could make creatures and monsters out of clay. Was totally disgusted when my friends couldn’t even make a snail or a snowman.
Sir Dash has a lot of gifts, what with the fingers and the drive and imagination. You and Mr. I have produced brilliant children. I’m sure of this and I’ve never been within a thousand miles of them. Way to Go!

Awesome magpie, very creative and detailed. Dash is an observer of nature. If Dash wants to save his creations you might try polymer clay. You bake it in the oven and it hardens; just follow the directions and use ventilation.

My daughter (age 16) and your Dash have been cut from the very same cloth. Be assured that the things that make him so very special will blossom into so many fabulous things he will do with his life. Artsy-Fartsy is just one of them. 🙂

Dash probably gets that arty farty stuff from you. And you know, it made me smile to think that kidlets all over the world catch tadpoles.

PS, the back of his head reminded me so of Dylan as a young boy it made me sniffle.
