The Log Insect
Among the gazillion things I need to blog (see that descriptive there? ‘NEED’ not ‘want’) are these shots I took just before we left to go away last week. Of a crazy creature brought in for Show and Tell at afternoon tea one day at Granite Glen…
It was like a stick insect – on ‘roids, man!
Easily as thick as a man’s finger and around a foot long … it was quite mesmerising. A little something for me to add to the bulging ‘freaky amazing Aussie critters’ file.
He arrived home clinging to his stick/branch which had somehow ended up wedged onto the side of the truck…
And then carefully untangled by the menfolk (and urged on by the kidfolk) to bring to the patio for inspection… these shots were taken the next morning when he was slightly concussed from a night spent in a Tupperware container.
He still managed to pose for the camera though – creeping around in slo-mo for me. He’s actually kinda handsome, in a insecty kinda way…
But then… I love freaky and weird.
Which is lucky really…
Because as you already know, I live in Freaky Weird Central.

Awesome. I love the colours on his head (or probably more correctly, *her* head … I think the big ones are usually girls…. from memory)

The biggest bug I’ve ever seen was a rhinoceros beetle. It was huge. But not that huge. Jees.

WOW! What a huge walking stick! My daughter (the entomology girl) said they have ’em that big in New Guinea (sp?) that have some kind of spikes on their legs. apparently the spikes can give you a sting. She also told me that a very large (by Louisiana scale) walking stick had very tiny spikes and tried to “stick” her with them.
Great pictures!
