Why I love this photo
This is a shot of our daughter Violet riding her trusty steed Lacey.
I just love it.
And, with your indulgence, I would like to share the reasons why.
1. It’s a silhouette – there is nothing more pleasing than a crisp silhouette (and it’s nearly as timeless as a black-and-white)
2. It’s in focus – a minor miracle in itself. I was driving a truck on a paddock road at the time. Well, okay it was kinda stopped but maybe rolling slightly and the engine was running and I managed no shake. *pats self on back*
3. The fact that I didn’t crash into a tree, while I was driving the truck, while I was taking this photo.
4. The dead tree is so … imperfect and perfect at the same time. Looks stark and a good foil for the other softness in the pic.
5. I think you can almost feel the trustworthiness of the amazing Lacey – who is a hundred years old (well, 32 in human years and that’s ancient in horse years!)
6. It shows Lacey’s old lady tummy – and that makes me smile for some reason.
7. It shows Violet’s super-confident attitude. She BELONGS in that saddle while she’s ridin’ the range!
8. It makes me wonder if she will still be ridin’ the range when she is 16. Or 26. Or 66.
9. The amazing colours – with the late afternoon clouds and seeping glow of the sunset.
10. That despite the stillness of the image, I know that lots of action saw an important job get done that afternoon. It was late, but thanks to the persistance of two little jillaroos and one bigger one, a cow got the treatment she really needed.
Thanks for that. I just needed to share.
Kids grow up so fast you just want to STOP TIME sometimes, and this is the only way I can find to do it!

All joking aside, I cannot figure how my oldest became 29. I cannot figure how my youngest is a junior in college. It makes me sad sometimes, as if I missed it, but I’m glad for what they have become. I rocked my babies for a season. I watched them grow. I watched them step into their own. My proudest times have been watching my children…

Amazing, wonderful photo! Good on you for such a solid shot with so much heart.
Yes, good thing you didn’t crash into a tree. Photographers and artists should have chauffeurs; obedient, kind chauffeurs willing to stop anywhere in an instant and wait patiently while said passenger runs wildly about exclaiming about the light.

That is beautiful. What a great shot BB. My son used to be so cute and tiny, now he is big and hairy and I love him to pieces.

The shot captures a pair of heroes; past and future. It makes me a little misty remembering when my baby girl controlled the world like a cat on a lead.

Such a precious photo for so many special reasons. It’s good for the soul to stop and take a moment and appreciate – and that photo and what it represents is WORTH APPRECIATING! Thanks for sharing your special girls – Lacey looks like a gem!

Beautiful capture. I can’t think about how fast my children grew up because it makes me cry. I can’t look at old photos of them for the same reason. Maybe someday, when I am lucky enough to have some grandkids. But I can wait for those. Maybe I’ll get another cat or dog first. Just don’t tell my husband.

Violet is beautiful on a horse! Such wonderful posture – hard to believe she’s still a little ‘un! My baby is 40, and as a photographer she’s trying very hard to stop time as my only grandchild grows up – he just turned one but it seems like he’s already 10!!!
