Road interruption
I drive a lot.
A LOT.
And sometimes I get to be the passenger – which allows me to show you some of the views I absorb during my hours behind the wheel.
Most bushies I know spend a fair percentage of their lives on the road – it comes with the territory, so to speak. We do all the same things families in town do, just from a bit further away.
For instance, I have to take Violet to the doctor this afternoon (nothing too dramatic, don’t worry). And what would have been a 10km round trip when we lived in the Big Smoke, is now a 110km round trip.
This weekend we have a 160km round trip for my husband to compete in a campdraft (the first one in the region since the floods) – and we’ll be doing it twice!
And I have to see a concert next week (totally being forced into it, can you tell?) so I will do about 1100km in 36 hours (plus I will jam a few more jobs in there somewhere to justify the effort!).
I’m not telling you for sympathy – it’s just part of the deal when you live out here. (A deal which does have innumerable benefits, such as not seeing your neighbour in their kitchen unless specifically invited.)
And while not all the roads are highways…
And not all the views are spectacular, along the roads…
There are enough breath-taking moments en route…
To ensure that I really don’t whinge that much at all…

Beautiful shots. Just completed a road trip to Broken hill and back and am really appreciating the colours, especially after all the rain.

Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, we too have a ton of great views no matter which way we drive. Hills, mountains, waterfalls, oceans, rivers, reservoirs, dams, Bridges so beautiful we have to capitalize the B. (Golden Gate or is that name dropping?)

Yep. Twas funny in Texas when the locals warned us about the enormous drives we had planned. I was all: At least you all got TOWNS to break up the scenery! You don’t really ‘get it’ til you are here. Big and open and friendly – just like me!

Bushebabe I love living far from everything also. I do not live as far out as you but I always enjoy the ride. Your photos are fantastic and the view is what it is all about. I am pretty sure you must go through a lot of gas It is probably our biggest expense at this point.. It is $1.27 liter here in Canada and I know it is more where you are. It will be going up again soon. That is the only downfall, the price you pay for solitude and beautiful scenery. I would not change a thing.
Hope everything goes well at the doc and have fun at your forced into it concert. B

Country driving!! Isn’t it fun? At least the roads are now mostly sealed in the outback, way back when I was a kid, they were all dirt and around Moree, black soil country, nothing moved when it rained.
I think it is atrocious that country people have to pay so much for petrol. One would think the government might consider a rebate!!! But I guess that would be akin to seeing a “flock of pink pigs” flying overhead.
Great shots of the countryside which does look very lush.
Cheers
Colin

You drove through the more populated part of Texas. There are not so many towns here in west Texas. You may drive for miles without seeing a town or gas station.
