Camouflage critters
I was forced to take a paddock drive yesterday – I won’t tell on my Dad but let’s just say we might need to write reminder notes on his dashboard when he leaves for his work-day in future! Ahem…
As is the case every time I am out cruising the back roads of our place however, I saw many amazing things. Things that kept my Nikon quite busy. Can you imagine?
Can you see what I spotted here?
HAve you ever noticed how Aussie wildlife is not at ALL colourful? All greys and browns and mottled earthy tones? (Think about it – kangaroos, emus, even wedgetail eagles).
This is why…
He was busy being a STICK, man. Very, very still and almost vertical amongst the grass…
Watching me, watching him, watching me…
Oh – it’s a bearded dragon by the way. Cute little fellas, especially when they see you coming and transform into little logs!
Now for something not QUITE so cute…
You ready?
This guys is a bit big to pull off the whole “I’m a stick” look…
See him?
He’s more, “I’m a tree”.
I wonder how many times I have ridden by an ironbark tree and been completely unaware of the sand goanna watching me from above, or peering at me from amid fallen timber?
They aren’t aggressive at all (to humans) but I do think they all need a good manicure.
To me, this photo – goanna, ironbark tree, waving leaves and blue sky – is pure Australia.
However, on inspection of this shot, I think a pedicure could be in order too, though.
Don’t you?
🙂

Wow a lizardy kinda day. Love the second last photo of the “I’m a tree” goanna. The last one looks like he is giving the tree a good old bear hug.

The sand goanna looks big. I am not familiar with them. A Victorian goanna chased after my dog once. I was safe on a tractor. My cattle rounding up dog was very afraid of the goanna.

Criminently, BB! How big IS that Goanna? I mean, he looks huge. If he’s the size I’m estimating (I guess he’s longer than I am tall), well, that’s enough to make any dog nervous, even an old one like me. He looks so very zen though. I can almost hear him chanting: “I am one, I am one with this tree…”

Wow! Australia knows how to grow lizards BIG. And scary looking. Glad you got the photos. Hope there was a zoom lens involved. I wouldn’t be excited about getting too close. I don’t care who says they’re not aggressive.

Love it – and I think he’s pretty cute too, gorgeous shots – I can see a calendar for one of them!

I love your goannas!!! Am I seeing things, or does his coloring continue right to the end of the nails? Sure looks like it!
