Dashing through his life…
It’s a bit of a special day here at Granite Glen… it’s Dash’s 11th birthday!
Seems impossible to me that more than a decade has passed since this bundle of killer grins arrived into our lives…
He turned my life inside out and upside down. I had no idea what we were in for, but he was (and is) a joy. And an inspiration after overcoming such adversity in his first year of life…
I rarely think about those days these days… but on days like today, I do.
(Enough ‘day’ references there for ya?)
His grin continues to slay me, his fingers and feet continue to grow and resemble an amphibian (long and skinny) and his artistic, loving and sunshiny* personality provide such joy and entertainment to those around him.
He adores all animals (with the definite exception of spiders) … in looking through old images in my somewhat extensive (and unorganised) archives, I discovered a shot I believe may have sparked his seven-year obsession with all things marine…
A touch-pool at Hervey Bay. Age 4. We have started to believe it’s not a passing fad, and therefore succumbed to his special birthday request (with advice from a marine biologist friend)..
It weighs a tonne and is VERY scientific and he is enthralled and refuses to part with it. Go figure.
I look at the photo above and I think I see the man he is already beginning to become. He is growing and changing and sometimes (like most Mums I suspect) I want it all to slow down. I am savouring the little boy-ness that remains and hope his core characteristics – his gusto for life, his loving nature, his killer grin – never change. (I plan to cover my ears as adolescence approaches, and bury my head in the sand if necessary!)
As I prepare for cake and visiting mates this afternoon (I do believe fishing may be on the agenda) I leave you with a couple more memories.
Hope you have a wonderful day, my little man… and that that grin of yours never wears out!
* Unless it’s been more than 3 hours since food – then all bets are off!

Best wishes to Dash. While you don’t want them to entirely stop getting older, you just want to slow it all down a bit.

Happy birthday!
For some reason my thoughts drift to: the feel of the deck rolling, the taste of salt air, the sight of blue waves that go to the horizon, and the sound of – ah,Mum, don’t worry men have been going to sea forever and we always come back.
