The last week
Oh. My. Gawd. It’s the final week of the Summer school holidays…
And the last week the young man pictured below has with us before his FIRST week of high school.
And his first week of boarding school… the changes are already making my head spin!!
Feels like last week that he started school, and the week before that, he was at Kindy and mesmerising bulls.
And, didn’t he just turn 9 like yesterday?
No?
He’s almost 13? How did that happen?
He will be three hours drive away from us at his new school and while we are comfortable with all the reasons he’s going (along with the fact he is keen to go himself), we are extremely aware of how much we will miss him. Especially THIS bloke. He looks tough, but trust me…
I am SO glad for mobile phones, which will keep us in MUCH better contact than when I was a high school boarder… we were pretty much weaned at the age of 12. I am grateful to a school who’s attitude recognises that WE are still the parents, and can be in as much contact as we like. Which will be a lot, with my treatments happening in the same town as his school. But there is absolutely no doubt that we will all have a bit of a Dash-sized hole in our lives.
That grin, those cuddles, that cruisy nature, even the niggling with his sister.
We are all wringing the best from each moment remaining.
And despite their bickering, I know that Violet will find it much harder than she realises just yet.
They are very close. And even though they are opposite in sooooo many ways, they have always had each other.
I suspect we will all be keeping VERY busy…
In the meantime, we are taking a mini beach break (finally some days away from home that aren’t hospital-related!!!) this week – savouring every little moment before we wave goodbye.
Am hoping my stiff upper lip holds for the next seven days…
Wish me luck.

Wishing the four of you the most relaxing break together YET! And backing you all the way that you WILL get through a tough emotional time with your upper lip remaining as stiff as possible. Love you all heaps and heaps. xoxox

Dash!
It ain’t that bad at boarding school or college.
I can assure you the dormitories and food have vastly improved since my days at Joey’s in Sydney in the 1950’s.
You will meet great new friends which you will have for the rest of your life.
Study hard and make Dad and Mum proud.
Cheers
Colin

One at a time, the kids left, until it was just Cara and Dylan. When Dylan went off to college, he and Cara stopped bickering altogether. It was then that they got very close. I am sure it will be so for your two.

Best of luck, Dash!! Just remember that those mobile phones work a whole lot better than some landlines, and as long as you have your auntie’s number you should be fine…

It will be a big change for ALL of you, even Axel! Time marches on, though, and I know y’all will adjust.

Do all children go to boarding school for the high school years?

Good luck Amanda. After what you have gone through, I’m sure this next phase will be handled with that same stiff upper lip. Hope you enjoy your Boarding School Dash. Best Wishes all round.
