Sweethearts Day
Please let this post be a salient warning heads-up for any girls out there looking for some romance with a farmer… (that’d include all those Farmer Wants A Wife chickadees, lining up in that traditional matchmaking venture: reality telly!)
Today is Valentines Day.
I know this because various media outlets (and Facebook in particular) keeps reminding me.
This is where my husband was on V Day 2016…
In a lovely green paddock. with one of his favourite pieces of machinery…
He’s there today, not because he forgot Valentines Day (I had *ahem* mentioned it once or twice over the past day or so, and been rewarded with a coffee early this morning before he headed out). He’s here because it’s now dry enough to plant seeds without the tractor bogging… and yet moist enough to be seed-friendly!
Those less experienced in the way of farming might feel a tad disgruntled to come second to ground moisture on ‘the most romantic day of the year’… but I have watched and learned from OTHER farmer’s wives and decided to ‘lean into it’.
I prepared some sandwiches, filled the thermos, packed some chairs and headed up the paddock around 11.30am. Just after my hubs rang to let me know he had only five rows to go!
We arrived as he finished and Violet helped empty excess seed from the seeder (I don’t actually know correct terminology here – go with me!)
Then we headed for husband’s favourite lunch spot – the shade of a small bottle tree half a km from the tractor.
Pretty nice! (Note, Violet’s cousin M is visiting this weekend – Violet took this pic, M is chatting to her favourite Uncle!)
My Valentine!! Love this pic – relaxed and smiling after finishing his task. And sending up a little prayer to the rain gods to maybe visit over the next week or so to encourage our leucaena seeds to germinate!
After pointing out some nearby plants to the girls, he hopped up and headed over to some bullrushes…
And to their enormous amusement, proceeded to cut a few heads with his pocket knife… and present the resulting ‘posy’ to me!!
Of course, the real gift is that he happily lets me share these pics and this little story…
But I have followed through and placed the bullrush posy in pride of place on our deck!
Does it get more romantic than that?
(Hint, not if you are a ‘bushie’… although my uncle does do a pretty good line in romance after 40 years of marriage – he’s taken though!).
And before I go… here is why we celebrate February 14 with a little more energy than most…
It also happens to be SweetHearts Day!
Celebrating and raising funds for HeartKids Australia – and revelling in our own heart hero, Dash. Eight babies are born with heart defects every day in Australia. So many little heart heroes, needing all you SweetHearts out there!

You have a beautiful family! And I would trade my life for that as a farmers wife in a heartbeat! My husband never remembers things like birthdays or Valentines Day unless I tell him nor do I receive so muchs a card or even a bullrush lol! You are a mighty lucky lady…as I’m sure you already know quite well. I’m jealous! Thank you for sharing with us!!! Someday I hope to visit Australia and I hope maybe I can meet you…your photos and stories give me so much joy!!!

Fantastic! I love that you ‘leant into it’, I like that and might have to borrow it. My hubby is a Pastor so today, being Sunday wasn’t one for romance. Actually, we’ve not really worried about it much over the years. I love your photos.

I’m not a romantic at all, so I totally approved of your way of embracing the day. 🙂
Bullrushes sound downright Biblical! I guess I never thought about them being the same thing as a “cat-tail”.
Love your photo collage for “Sweetheart Day”.

We exchanged cards and Tim bought me roses. We had a family dinner of Tim’s choosing (spaghetti) and hosted Brianna and William. It was good enough for me.

I know what it is like. My hubby is on the go all the time and I think his valentine is his red tractor as well but even she didn’t get a look in this year.

My dad always carried a pocket knife and cut every thing with it, from peeling an apple for us to cutting bailing twine and all in between.

I bet the bullrushes last longer than red roses. A delightful post to read. I’m impressed with your clear blue sky but do hope it brings those much needed showers soon.
