Classic Reds!
We are smack-bang in the midst of bull-sale season here at the moment… that means: lots of bull photos being taken, heaps of stats and facts and figures being compiled, a few nails being nibbled as ‘our boys’ head into auction rings, and very little blogging being achieved!
Bull photos are challenging for me for many reasons – not the least of which is that I am on crutches at the moment (four weeks into an enforced 6-week layoff) and that our property has precious few FLAT areas – which are essential for a decent bovine pose.
Now photographing bulls is NOT for the faint-hearted – not so much because the bulls are scary or naughty (they can the the latter – all that testosterone!)… like this dude (above) who is digging a hole…
… but because a good bull photo needs to be JUST SO (standing square, near back leg slightly back, head up and 1/4 turned away from camera so the far ear JUST shows)…
This guy is not ONLY not standing right, he is thoroughly distracted… by a photobombing horse!
It also tests husband’s patience to the max… many a marriage has teetered on the endless quest for THAT photo of a bull. It can make or break a sale. And many a photographer has threatened to leave the camera in the hands of a partner who has had enough of ‘a bit further forward‘, ‘that back leg isn’t right’ and ‘get his attention quick, QUICK!’… ‘missed it, let’s try again!’.
But this is the first time I had to deal with camera-hungry horses wanting in on the action…
My silver lining was that (as a blogger) if I couldn’t get a decent bull photo, I could at least grab a decent meme, right?
And lucky Mr I does LOVE a chance to have a ‘moment’ with his bovine buddies.
They are bit like puppies… but a LOT bigger. And quite demanding…
Scratch ME…
Come on! No ME..
How come he’s getting all the attention?
Aaahhh… that’s the spot.
Oh, there is good too!
Oi… back here buddy!
Sometimes you have to work with what’s going on…
SMILE honey… Ha!
FINALLY… someone decides to pose…
Right stance, wrong angle…
Thank goodness for my trusty four-wheeler!
BOOM. Bimbadeen Loxton – you gorgeous thing.
Not bad Lytton. You’ll do.
Latrobe. You great loveable lug. All 800kg of you!
So from about 200 photos, which one is my favourite?
And even though it is not technically ‘right’… it’s this one.
Tells the story – a man and his boy bovine buds.

Gorgeous bulls… and I was glad you managed to get a smile out of your man, too. 🙂
Knowing what all goes into the process, I truly appreciate those final ‘correct’ photos!

…and I made that sound like I know what goes into the process! I guess I should have said “thanks to you sharing with us what goes into the process…” 😉

What fun you’ve been having.
It would be good if they just listened to instructions and just stood there.
Love the man and his beasts shots.

Poor you on crutches. So glad you have the trustee four wheeler. I had been imagining you taking your shots and overbalancing.
These beasts are impressive as is the photography of them.
Do I assume that you market them through a site, rather than sending to sale?
