Hungry Hippos!
Over the years, I have shared a lot of photos of cows grazing on this blog… but never QUITE like this.

Let me introduce you to the smartest cows on our place – and possibly the luckiest.

They belong in a paddock known as ‘The Bridge’. (Earlier posts in this location HERE and HERE).
‘The Bridge’ is bounded along one side by a river which ebbs and flows (or not, depending on the flood/drought situation at the time).
We have had a reasonable storm season here – catching the edges of quite a few rain events and enjoying a green outlook. We certainly haven’t had the massive falls North Queensland has endured in early 2025 – poor buggars. The bovines up north needed flippers in some places!
Currently, our river is host to a massive influx of water lily plants* across the shallower water at the upper end of the paddock. (*I think? Nymphaea alba or Nymphaea violacea? I haven’t noticed the colour of the flowers on them but could be Blue Waterlily.)

And apparently water lily greenery is SCRUMPTIOUS. Have you ever seen such happy hippos/cows?
The weights in these girls are pretty amazing – who knew water lilies were such great fodder for bovines? Not me… (and aren’t you glad that Mature Cow Weight is a regular scientific measure in bovines and not humans! I am, that’s for sure!)

Of course, there is also the added bonus of the cooling properties of water – summer has been a HOT one here. (Regularly in the high 30C’s and low 40C’s).
Like I said, we have very smart cows.
How’s the weather treating you in your corner of the world? Do you have a version of Hungry Hippos in your back yard??

Oh that is funny. Keep us updated if they begin developing fins. This may be how manatees (aka sea cows) got their start.

Wow!! It looks like an ideal set up for them! When we use to have cows they liked wading when it was hot, but I never remember seeing one eating water lilies.
I’m so glad to see a new post from you!
