The Cool Kids’ Cafe
We had a real treat last night… our kids served us dinner. Not just ANY dinner though… it was courtesy of a little place called the ‘Cool Kids’ Cafe’!
As part of the school curriculum to learn about healthy foods and cooking, Dash and Violet’s amazing teacher took it upon herself to turn the tiny school she teaches at into a one-night cafe. It was incredible – parents were invited to attend and we sat in the classroom which had been utterly transformed into a first-class restaurant.
The students had festooned their classroom with fairylights, and covered tables with white paper, set them with good cutlery, red napkins and candlelight. That’s the blurry silhouette of our teacher (Ms P) you can see. I shall do a proper portrait one day, but this action shot is apt as she is ALWAYS on the go!
Isn’t the effect just awesome?
The preppies (ages 4-5) served us ‘nibbles’ and took our soup orders. (They circled either a chicken or a pumpkin on their ‘order forms’) as we supped our BYO beverages.
It was very entertaining (and not a little bit nerve-wracking) watching these serious little waiters and waitresses carefully carrying plastic bowls filled with soup out to the tables. I felt like cheering each time one made it intact! This was the chicken option that Violet managed to get to me with only a few minor wobbles – it was delicious.
The older students all did individual menus for their parents (same menu items, unique descriptions and layout). They were fantastic – here is Dash’s main meal description…
I’m thinking he MAY have had some help spelling ‘marinated’… but I was totally proud of his pride in his finished product…
I didn’t get many photos DURING the meal – too busy enjoying a rare meal out and some great company. There were pork chops and rib fillet steak with various sauces, and Ms P even managed to cater for my current restricted diet (steamed rice, steamed veges and soy sauce for mains and fruit kebab for dessert – which was lovely, even for a carnivore foodie like myself).
This is what the non-dieting people got for sweets…
Chocolate mousse…
Pavlova….
YUMMMMMM!!!!
Mr Incredible would have licked his mousse glass clean, if we had not been playing ‘ladies and gentlemen’… and how very cute is our little waitress? Go Violet!
We arrived home sometime after 9.30pm with two snoring children, and reflected on the wonderful little community and school which we are so lucky to be part of. After all, how many parents get to dress up, dine well (for just $10 a head) in great company, get fabulous service and not have to worry about babysitting?
I think Ms P may be onto something here… don’t you?
