Unexpected beauty…
I got into trouble for taking this photo…
It’s the flower of a scotch thistle.
“A bloody weed!” as my better half vigorously pointed out.
Quite right.
But a pretty bloody weed.
Doncha think?
LATE EDIT – not a scotch thistle but some other kind. Okay botanists – any ideas on species??

These used to grow profusely down the backyard of my childhood home. I always enjoyed the flowers. But I can also remember…they are very prickly. Ouch!

Those thistles can be nasty, we dont have the pretty flower like that, ours is kind of purple. Have a great day!

I love the the yellow stamen and crimson pistil against the white petals. Awesome. I’m a big fan of weeds.

Lovely.
I’m a botanist and Aussie native plantlover and think many “garden” plants sold in commerical nurseries are weeds .. like Duranta and Jacaranda. (Lovely flowers though).

That reminds me – I taught ‘Salina how to pop the wild cotton bolls on the weekend.
Weeds can be fun, too.

I’ve been looking to identify it, but I haven’t found a good, comprehensive Australian wildflower guide online. It looks a little like our Venice mallow, but it’s prickly like a buffalo bur. Weeds are usually my favorite flowers:o)

Scotch Thistle is one name for it (so you/we are right) but also Spear Thistle.
