World Weather Watch – August 5

Have I mentioned how dry it is here?

Yes? Oh that’s right…. I did that already!

weather_0184

Our few lonely clouds just cannot get their act together to precipitate.

Outlook for today (Wednesday August 5):

Temperature: 5-25 degrees Celsius (not bad)

Wind – 9km/hr ESE (nice)

Chance of Rain – <5%> 1mm (= sweet nothin’!)

I guess two outa three ain’t bad.

So, what’s happening out your window?

we're finally getting some clouds and cooler weather. We set some records for heat recently, and even though I grew up in the desert I'm not real comfortable with heat combined with high humidity.

We have a chance of rain tonight, but more likely to hold off until daytime. Hubby the roofer has me checking radar throughout the night (I work night shift) so that if I see any "real" storms coming, I can wake him up to worry more effectively. (sigh) But after a freakish July (more days in the 70's than the 90's–and no, I don't know the conversion to Celcius off the top of my head, sorry) we're heading into a "normal" August of high 90's with a heat index of 100 or more. Sticky. If I could figure out how to re-distribute rain, I would–a couple of weeks ago, we had 5 inches of rain in just a couple of hours–flooded the ditches and our driveway for a couple of hours. I'd have been perfectly willing to share!

After weeks of mid 60s temps and blue skies, it rained today after a high of 77 degrees. Not bad for Alaska. Perfect timing for the rain as the fertilizer has been put down for second cut hay. State Fair starts in three weeks and that always brings the rain.

Wish it would rain in the Interior though. The Railbelt Complex fire is way out of control and keeping all the firefighters busy.

Your brown dirt does look like Georgia red clay.

Finally we are having perfect weather for putting up hay!! Have been in the hayfield the last two days. No rain in the last 4 days. Pastures and barnyards starting to dry up….I am soooooo sick of mud!!

Cooler temps at night – 60's…..85 during the day and dry air. The lack of humidity has made everyone feel so much better.

Would love to send you much needed rain. Is this dry weather a normal weather pattern for you? Will you get a rainy season any time soon?

So nice this morning in Michigan! Yesterday was very hot and muggy. Today it's about 58F with predicted high's in the high 70's, low 80's. We could use some rain though, it's been a while. You can tell who uses their sprinklers and who doesn't!

I just twittered this, but I'll put it here, too. This morning I decided to sleep in for just another 30 minutes, so of course I had another weird dream. I dreamed I woke up to snow. In August. In Kansas. Yet, I was excited about the snow. After running outside to frolic in it for a while (which would not have been my reaction in real life), I came here and reported it for your Weather Watch. When I woke, I halfway thought it was real and had to look out the window to be sure.

The real weather report for my little town just southeast of Wichita, Kansas is a high of 93F with isolated thunderstorms developing this afternoon. Yesterday it felt much hotter than it did last week–more like normal August weather in Kansas–but the high was still only 96F. (The record for August 4th is 105F.) It was humid, though, and we did have some light sprinkles in the morning.

It seems there have not been as many reports of tornadoes in the area this season. Caleb is at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and he says there have been tornado watches and tornado warnings in the area. We didn't even know they had tornadoes out that way, but a quick google search shows they have been known to have some in the past. He says they've been getting quite a bit of rain, too.

Thanks for stopping by my blog this morning Aussie friend.

As for weather, here's my report from our Enchanted New Mexico, USA!

    82 degrees F
    25% humidity
    dew point: 50 F
    mostly sunny/partly cloudy
    wind: 7mph from the west
pressure: 29.81 and rising (we're hoping for rain)
    We're at 7300 ft elevation

At night we can expect 50 degree F temps. All this week is pretty much the same.

I hope you see some good rainfall soon, too!

We've had four days without rain. I'm grateful for that, by gosh. Last weekend, we got 4 inches of rain in one weekend. Finally, the mosquito breeding puddles are starting to dry….

  • CovingtonKat

Here in the Pacific NW (WA State, USA) we have had an unusually hot dry summer – setting all kind of record highs, # of days over 80, least amount of rainfall and FINALLY it has cooled down to our average for this time of year – mid 70s – Hallelujah!

BTW – been lurking for a while – clicked over to you from PW's site – your photos, family, and ranch are all lovely!

    Hi Stranger,
I've just al morning catching up on you and yours.
I might just try to do a little update of our own soon. Things seem to be on the up for us.
The weather? Well it's blowing an absolute gale up here on Windy Hill!!!!!
    Cheers

right now, (3 am, thursday morning) it's 14 C and cloudy. it's been somewhat cool of late which has pleased me enormously. i do dislike the hot summer temps that my clime is capable of attaining. thursday's outlook appears to be nice as well, 21C with 40% chance of rain.

Gosh I love this weekly ritual… I only hope everyone else doesn't get sick of it!!

DW – can I have your weather for a while please? I can offer cool and dry in return? Purty please!

Gem – welcome back darlin'!! We have missed you… hope you caught up on your reading and are ready to share again… fancy your place being windy!!

CovingtonKat – WELCOME to the little black bush blog! Glad you made it over and came out… I don't speak very good American, but think WA is Washington (yes?) state. I believe I whizzed by there somewhere in the 90's on a Contiki tour. The bus was airconditioned so I have no real recollection of the weather (aside from the stale air outside the MacDonalds restaurants!).

Debby – I even yearn for mozzie-infested puddles, we are so desperate for rain… I nearly drowned in bulldust today! (And not just the stories my son was spinning me from school either).

Lisa – I may have to check my temp conversions but that sounds kinda nice… balmy? And very, very precise!!!

Jenni – hey! That sounds warm and ominous at the same time. We don't have tornadoes down here (at least not the big and hairy-scary variety) so am quite fascinated by any stories about them. More!

Deb – know what you mean about the sprinklers… our houseyard is a little oasis of verde in an ocean of parched sepia. I feel a little guilty but the water is not what we use for drinking or bathing, and keeps us sane. Always a plus!

AK PonyGirl – wow. Alaska! I always imagined that Alaska was continually snow. Which I suppose is as annoying for locals there as it is for Aussies who have to explain that we have the same variation in weather as all of the USA. Heh. And welcome!!

Gretchen in KS – I appreciate the sentiment and intent… a rain-swap would be fabulous! Alas we must leave all that to Mother Nature and The Good Lord, and just whinge amongst ourselves! Heh.

Elizabeth – typical Gold Coast… bloody green too I suppose! Show offs. 🙂

Wrensong Farm – I hear you. I go all shiny in hot humid weather… but that humidity is what we crave at the moment. My skin is sucking in moisturiser like a hoover it is so dry…

    Thanks for playing y'all!!!
