Doggone Love

This is Cosmo – our “firstborn”.
This is Cosmo with our “real” firstborn.

This giant pooch (hip high to me and weighing in at around 70kg) was unbelievably gentle with him. They were best friends.
This blue merle Great Dane was so much part of our lives that he even featured in the images on our wedding invitations.
He was magnificent – my shadow.
I miss him so…

    Straight from whinging to crying.

My Buck has arthritis. He fell down the stairs three times in one week, but still insists on following me up the stairs at night to sleep in the hall, outside the bedroom door, in case Tim acts up. (He’s never quite trusted Tim.)

What lies ahead will break my heart.

    Hi Bush Babe,

They’re both beautiful. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Love your blog! Found yours because you stopped by mine, I think via PW. I’ve always dreamed of visiting your country, especially now that we’re hip deep in snow and more is on the way. Movies like My Brilliant Career and such (I say “such” because I forget the name of the other ones) made it seem so delightfully foreign and therefore interesting, and then I read Bill Bryson’s book and that cinched it.

I’ll stop by often to read more of your wonderful blog.

Jeanie – I know you do – a year has gone by since he left us and still it hurts. Lucky we have such special memories.
Deb – sorry to play with your emotions like that. I stumbled on some pics of Coz and just had to put them up and share his beauty. It was his time to go, and he too had terrible arthritis in the end. I am sad for me. We need another one just like him. Give your Buck a hug for me.
Pam – you are too kind. Sorry to start you off on a sad day. I try to be a bit upbeat (or to shock my American readers with some bizarre animals, eh Deb?).

No worries. I’m not easily put off.

As for bizarre animals, bring ’em on. I know you’ve got lots to choose from. And you know I’m a Canadian, right?

What beautiful photos and a beautiful friend. I love that you had him on your wedding invitations.

We had a Rottweiler named Thor when we first got married. He was such a big dog, buy do wise and gentle. He would wrestle with Danny and never hurt him. He always ran at me and put his paws on my shoulders to greet me, but when I was pregnant–before I was ever showing–he knew to be more careful and would always stop just inches in front of me. I know what it’s like to lose such a friend.

Pam – my sincere apologies – it was the accent that threw me! I shall dive a little deeper into your site and aquaint myself better with you (I usually assume PW’s readers are American). Thanks again for the lovely comments. I needed a hug today!

Oh, see, now that was my fault. I should have said “no worries, EH?”

Canucks are lumped in with Americans all the time, especially in the UK where they don’t seem to care even when it’s pointed out. Canada is just…insignificant to most of the world. We’re happy to sit quietly in the shadow of our wonderful neighbour to the south of us, who is like an older, more handsome and popular big brother who beats up bullies for us. Now The Netherlands is where to go if you’re Canadian and want a fuss made over you.

I’m originally from Toronto, but I’ve lived in Montreal for the past twentyumpteen years. And no, I’m not French, either.(wink) But my dream is to visit Australia, India and Bali some day. Also Italy, in case anyone Upstairs is throwing the dice for me.

If you’re a writer, you should come meet the gang over at Compuserve Books and Writers Forum. There are some best-selling authors like Diana Gabaldon who hang out there (who, coincidentally, just lost her dog Gus last week and is feeling terrible) and some total newbies. Oh, and there are a few journalists and Aussies there, too. Free to join, and you can lurk first if you’re more comfortable.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Losing a pet is really tough, they ARE family members. Our dog is very arthritic and getting worse every year. We didn’t think she would make it through last winter but did and is doing ok so far this winter too.

Your “other” firstborn is gorgeous too!

He was a hansome man!! I love big dogs!! Your little man is adorable too! I love that picture of him and you two walking on the beach!!

    BB,

I know that you have your working dogs, but do you have friend dog? You should. To borrow a phrase, IMO, you should get a friend dog. (thanks, a!)

Siiiiiigh… one of the downsides of a Great Dane is their short lives. Pity when everything else about them is so Tall.
