Diving in… twi-helping me out!

Is this place acceptable as a confessional?  I’m not Catholic, so it should be okay… as long as one confesses, right?

*deep breath*

Right. My name is Bush Babe and I am a Twi-addict.  Or Twi-a-holic. Or Twi-Hard.  Whatever…

That’s right. You heard me.  At an age where I SHOULD be all serious about my literature, I have turned to teenage vampires and werewolves for escapism. And I don’t even like fantasy.  Or anything remotely violent… Yet… I am quite compelled to keep on hoovering up whatever Twilight story comes my way.

Is this healthy?  Who knows…

All I know is I started with watching the Twilight movie (to see what all the silly vampire fuss was all about) … and then thought… well, I’d better see if the book is any better than that. (Who me? Ogling a teenager with super-stare abilities? That would be just sick… wouldn’t it?).

And guess what? The book was really quite good.

And then I went back to my local library and guess what?  New Moon just happened to be in… and it was… well, let’s just say I read it in less than 24 hours.

Ahem.

And among my chores today in town?

The lovely librarian had tracked down Eclipse for me and it was arriving this afternoon.  And conveniently…

Breaking Dawn had been returned to the shelves a couple of days earlier…

So I’m guessing I might be a little light on in the posting department for the next 48 hours.

I promise to check on you when I take a wee break, okay.

Anyone else become addicted? To Stephanie Meyer.  To another author. To something else.  Go on… make me feel better. Please?

Who needs mature… when you can have… ummm… Edward I think. All that self control makes you just want to push his buttons, don’t you think? I could LOOK at Jacob all day long though!

I refused to read those books for a long time. “But MOM! They’re sooooo good! You NEED to read them!” my oldest daughter insisted. Still I held out. I don’t like vampires or werewolves or teen romance novels (or any modern romance novels). Blech! Then the girls forced us to watch the movie, and I thought I could definitely do without reading them. (Robert Pattinson just doesn’t do it for me.) But dd persisted and so did all of her friends. My youngest read the first book. She is not a reader and she read (not that it wasn’t somewhat painful) that big, thick book. And I thought, “I should really read these so I know what they’re into and can discuss the books with them.”

Wouldn’t you know, I was hooked within the first chapter of the first book, and devoured them within a few days each, often ignoring housework to read. Great literature? Heavens no! But the story is compelling and the characters invite the reader into their lives.

I was particularly interested in what the books said about relationships. There is some good and bad modeling for healthy relationships in there, and the books could be used to open discussion with teens about what is often a delicate topic.

Also fascinating was the whole Twilight fan culture. Did you know there are women my age and older who participate in fan(tasy) forums and clubs? It amazes me to hear some of these women talk like lovesick thirteen-year-olds. The psychology there fascinated me so much that I joined a forum just to observe and see if I could it all out. I had to quit it pretty quickly because…WOW…it was just too crazy and too much and a bit sickening but fascinating nevertheless.

Now, I will tell you, that last book gets pretty intense in describing Bella’s desires. I’m glad my then 12yodd quit after the first book because I don’t think she is ready for the last. Pretty erotic for teen lit, but then you should read some of the adult fan fiction that is out there. Or maybe not.

See, you started off just like me… and then… and then… It’s addictive, isn’t it? I have no intentions of getting all fanatical, but I AM fascinated by how SM can spin a story so well. She hits a nerve so succinctly. Saw something about how she thought it was our culture’s obsession with youth and fear of aging that helped it’s success.

And thanks for the heads up for the last book – I am now intrigued.
      🙂

I have so far stayed away from the Twilight series, but two of my sisters and my mother have read them, and just rave their praises.

I can understand the addiction though. I felt that way with the Harry Potter series.

Ya….Obsessed may be an understatement for me. lol Just got my ticket to the midnight opening night showing of Eclipse. So excited! SM’s other book The Host is also REALLY good! And there is a whole 200-something page Midnight Sun story on SM’s website, along with outtakes and all sorts of fun extras. Just in case you need another fix. 😉 Have fun!

The first step is realizing you have a problem 😉

I read them all too, a couple of times. And i liked the movies a lot and i’m excited for the next one. And i’m drooling over a vampire 12 yrs younger than me…Although i do believe the actor is older than 18…i think 🙂

Her other book The Host is really good. I liked it better than Twilight actually. Shhh don’t tell anyone!

Oh, dear! I’m so glad I’m not alone in my obsession with the Twilight series! Read them all, saw the movies, mmmm. I think I’m on Team Edward, but Jacob has a lot going for him, too, and I don’t mean all that hair. I also read The Host and couldn’t put it down. Housework be damned, I want to read! I also love the True Blood type books about Sookie Stackhouse.

I enjoyed the Twilight books. I saw the first movie and wasn’t that impressed but the books were wonderful.
Speaking of books, in 2008 I began reading the Harry Potter books from the beginning and couldn’t stop until they were all complete. It took me two months and it was a wonderful romp! Wonderful.

Bwahahaha. I initially avoided them because I’m always drawn to the teenage/young adult books – it’s a hangover from teaching high school English – and I was trying so hard to be all grown up and stuff. Finally caved and bought the first one, read it in a night and went back to the shop for the other three the next day then finished them within 4 days. Luckily the Daddy of the house was away for work that week and the kids quite enjoyed the crappy thrown-together meals and no clean clothes LOL. And yes, I loved them. Won’t be seeing the movie(s) though.

*Chuckle, chuckle* Hummmmmmm. It’s so funny! We all sound so much alike–and none of us teens. My middle daughter–in her 30s and mother of 3 started reading the Twilight series in ’08, I think. She said, “Mom, you HAVE to read this book. You’ll really like it.” As I’d never heard of it, and I do love to read, and like to know what my kids (lol) are reading, I asked, “OK, so what is this about?”

“Vampires and werewolves.” I rolled my eyes. “You know, I don’t go in for vampires. Really.”

She kept up the pressure to read the series.

Needless to say, I did begin to read. And I continued to read. Since I’m a bit of a conservative in the morals department, I was shocked that Edward spent every night with Bella. In bed. Before marriage. Is that really what we want our teenage girls to think is normal? Not, me. Not that any of my children are teenagers. But, other teenagers might be led astray.

BB and anyone who’s planning to read the series and hasn’t yet, BE WARNED!!! DON’T READ BEYOND THIS POINT. IT MIGHT SPOIL THE SUSPENSE. (Sorry, I had to go back and inject this in after I realized everyone might not have finished reading the last book.)

I read all 4 books. Read “Host” and liked it as well. Intriguing idea.

Saw the two movies that are out. Really have to agree with my daughter that FORCED (ha, ha) me to read these books: Mrs. Meyer had one huge shortcoming in the last book. Everything was neatly tied up at the end. Jacob’s loyalty and devotion and love for Bella was rewarded in the end by “imprinting” on her newborn daughter? Who is supposed to eventually end up as his wife? That’s just a little sick to me.

And to top it all off, NO ONE had any real consequences for the choices they made. Everything was rosy in the end. How realistic is that? I think that’s a bit of a disservice to young people who struggle with consequences for their own actions.

I thought the movies were intriguing and interesting. And, my very most FAVORITE character of all is Alice, Edward’s “sister”. And in the movies, Jacob is, in my humble estimation, the most attractive of Bella’s two “love interests”. Mr. Pattinson never “buffed up” for the part, which, made him seem less that the “rock hard, exceptionally masculine” character Edward was described as being in the books. (Sorry if I offend anyone. It’s only my opinion, anyway!) And, Mr. Lautner is quite young. Still a teen, I believe, and a very cute one at that! That’s all I’m sayin’.

I actually read the books first so when the first Twilight movie came out, I was devastated. Thankfully, the New Moon movie is a lot better.

BTW check your mail coz I sent you Midnight Sun earlier. It’s an unfinished draft so you’ll finish it in no time ^-^

  • Pam

Oh yes read the series and loved it, the books couldnt come out fast enough!! Not really a groupie though LOL I did enjoy the story and the movies.
I live in Washington state, and some of the stuff was pretty funny in the movie to see the all dark skys most of the time, its not always that dark and wet here LOL I have friends, women in their 40’s LOL that are such fans that they have gone on Twilight sebaticals and visited Forks and La Push, they are real places LOL. I am sure the area up there loves the tourism.

  • Molly

I know this is an old post (am reading them all having discovered you late last week) but I have to admit I just finished rereading the last three books in the last five days. I enjoy them. I am firmly on Team Jacob. I hope you enjoyed reading them.
