A week to remember (5)
MEASURING STICKS…
Flood waters are rising every hour here… it’s amazing and eerie at the same time. We are starting to wonder how much higher it can go!
To illustrate the effect of the latest couple of inches of rain falling on already-sodden ground have had, I am posting a couple of before-and-afters for you.
The Little Bridge (also known affectionately as “Tuffy’s Bridge” at Granite Glen) as it would have appeared two weeks ago… with just a trickle going under after light rain.
…and in flood eight days ago.
Then yesterday morning…
Up our little creek comes…
Guide posts completely vanished from sight…
Then there is the dam wall, some 15km downstream from our house…
Shots taken here in April with levels at about 8% of the dam’s capacity.
It was a LONG way down to the water from the viewing platform then…
My aunt and uncle joined a few intrepid souls who drove through creeks to check out the view yesterday morning…
as it overflowed at 7.20am. These shots belong to my aunt…
Apparently late last night, it was more than TWO METRES over the spillway – it would have been THUNDERING down…
But the bit that really knocked my socks off is THIS particular place.
The Big Bridge, situated further upstream, which usually offers motorists a hair-raising drive across a great height over very little water…
This next shot was taken yesterday morning at about 8am.
I have never seen it this high.
I recall (vaguely) as a child, reaching up to try and touch the underside of the boards as we drove under in the ski boat.
Swallows would nest under there.
No-one I know has EVER seen it go over this bridge.
And yet…
Late yesterday afternoon, as the light faded from the sky…
Our neighbour ventured down to see this…
Oh. My. GOD.
She’s UNDER…
It’s enough to make you pause.
And wonder.
How much more?
And do we need an ark?

Dear Sister
I don’t think we will make it there today.
Weather forecast today was “clearing in the South-East, so the torrential rain will be heading to Granite Glen and Paradise”…
Station wagon may not get out of our driveway, let alone through some of your puddles.

wow BB – incredible series of shots to illustrate the flood waters – do you have enough supplies to keep you going for awhile? What’s the forecast like? Stay safe, dry and sane if you can.

Hope you have some gopher wood for your ark. But maybe wood from gum trees will suffice. After seeing the big ‘roo in your yard from the last post I’m thinking the animals may be gathering for a ride in that ark. Hoping the bridges and the dam hold!

Holy Batman!!! I can’t imagine being that close to real floodwaters. When I lived in Atlanta I saw occasional flooding, but not anything on this scale. I hope it doesn’t go any higher and that it recedes quickly without much damage. Feast or famine, huh? Flood or dust? I’m sending safe, dry thoughts to your family and critters.

Again just amazing shots!! My head is spinning over the shots of the dam, remembering what it was like in September…and to see it like this now….WOW!!!

OMIGOD!!! That’s just incredible!! But the ark mightn’t make any difference – from watching the news it looks like most of Australia is under water!!
Stay dry!

Holy guacamole. All I can think of is this…when I first met you, Granite Glen was drought stricken. Now, my gosh. Those pictures are scary. That’s a lot of water. Are you trapped?
Jeanie? I think you’re wise to take a miss on it today…

Wow!!! I just want to see it in person, can’t believe these photos. Mum says Cania is close to going over. Not sure if you are aware but when Cania was built Dad said he would put a keg on if it ever ran over. I believe the moths may be about to fly out of the wallet somewhere other than a race track!! Get your beer glass ready, keg at Mum and Dad’s when we finally make it up if Cania has run over!!!!
