The Welcoming Committee

When we arrived at the Lodge (in Oklahoma) last week, everything was very quiet.  And considering we had been staying in full-on chaos of New York and then hotels in various southern cities in recent days, I have to say the complete peace and quiet was very, very welcome…

As the kids went exploring, happy to run around like mad things after (yet another) another car ride, we sat back.  The wonderful deck area was the perfect place to have a coffee (but really, where isn’t?) and just soak those open expanses in…

I made Mr Incredible pose for a photo specially for Debby and Tim (that’s his cap!)…

We looked at the sky, and the horizon and the roads stretching into the distance.

Then we studied our toes.

Well, Mr Incredible’s new boot toe…

And then…

And then the welcoming committee arrived.

Does anyone recognise this vertically-challenged canine?

Sir Charles, I presume?

(I could swear he was smiling and looked pleased to see us in the first pic, but with Basset Hounds it’s really quite hard to tell).

Charlie and the kids inspected each other a point blank range for a little while, before Ree’s oldest girl came and took him home. Again.  He runs away on a regular basis these days apparently…

This is Josh’s work dog… I think.  She wasn’t working. She was inspecting the new Lodge inhabitants.  Or perhaps that IS her job?

And we also had this darling girl pop on over too - can anyone remember her name?  This is the dog that’s had lots and lots of litters.  She’s a peach and basked in some cuddles…

(LATE EDIT: I think we are all agreed: this is Hooker.  How could I forget?)

And then there was George.  George just about moved in with us as soon as we arrived.

And chaperoned us all over the place.  And posed for many, many photos.  He’s a seasoned pro.

I am not sure a more appropriate welcome could have possibly been arranged.

(Axel Rose would have been in heaven had he been able to stow away in our bags… so many buddies to frolick with!)

And while the human residents provided plenty of excitement of their own… I sure was delighted with our own Oklahoma Welcoming Committee…

  2. So fun to see two worlds meet. There you all are with–tah dah!–Charley! And all the other canines of PW”s Blog.

Now I’m guessing you’re back in OZ. No tornado and no hot air balloon. Only munchkins who must be pretty dazed by all that travel. So fun to see U.S. through your eyes. Thanks for posting such adventures.

Is the black and white dog Josh’s dog yoyo? The one that was part of the great escape with George and Charlie a couple of weeks ago that caused Ree some grief?? The kids look as happy as can be!! Mr I is breaking in his new boots good and proper, but Violet, your boots are just fab!! If this had been me, Ree would have had to call the sheriff to remove me from the lodge talk about paradise!! safe travels!

  9. As a true “dog person” at heart I thoroughly enjoyed this. And dare I admit I’m probably one of the ONLY people on earth that doesn’t follow PW’s blog?? I did watch the special “Throwdown” with Bobby Flay when he challenged her to a Thanksgiving meal, though, so I got a chance to learn more about her then.

I was also entertained to see that your little “acorns” haven’t fallen far from the tree (with their cameras in hand)!!!

  10. That’s where I usually end up … visiting with people’s dogs! If I don’t find them, they find me… strange how that happens! Glad you’re enjoying Houston. BIG CITY, HUGE RODEO! But Galveston and Johnson Space Center are cool side trips if you get a chance.

  12. Love your welcoming committee, BB. And what a wonderful, soothing view from that place. You were so blessed. Hey, just returned from a walk in Central Park and it POURED all the way home to Maryland. Are you home yet?

  13. Chances are if you are still in Houston, you are at the Houston Livestock Show. Did you know that there are 35,000 (yes, that’s THREE zeros!) volunteers that work that show each year? We visited on Saturday, as did, seemingly, most of the people passing through the western hemisphere at the time. It was very crowded but impressive. Your view of all that you’re seeing makes for interesting reading. I echo the question however of the commenter that asked where you keep the hay, the machinery and leather tack if you have no barns?
