Horses, hues and HELP!
We attended a campdraft over the weekend… it was the first event held in this region since the floods. Normally there would have been five or six drafts already in the season, but it doesn’t seem to know how to stop raining here this year. (And I am wincing here, in case I have jinxed the entire area to a decade of drought with that statement!)
If you are a reasonably recent arrival here, then THIS is what campdrafting is all about.
We got to see our kid’s schoolteacher in action for the first time (Miss S is in charge while Ms P is on maternity leave from our one-teacher school). This is Miss S …
Holy smokes… girlfriend can RIDE!!
Violet watched her teacher VERY closely and may be looking at her in a whole new light today, back at school…
Violet also discovered some pups someone was giving away – luckily (?) we have five of our own here at Granite Glen. We said No. I’m not popular.
Dash also had a ride around – he didn’t compete. Well, except for the impromptu races he and his cousin had outside the arena. Before Pickles stepped sideways while Dash was mid-bounce and he landed on his noggin. Luckily he was wearing his helmut and he lands pretty light and he has a hard head. He got a fright but enjoyed the attention from the St John’s officers in the aftermath. His Mum lost approximately 11 years in the process. He is none the worse for wear (ego excepting).
I met up with a lot of people I know and love and don’t see nearly enough of. Pretty much all of them are horse-mad. Essential requirements for campdraft spectators really.
My husband had a good weekend – after a very long layoff, he managed a few extra rounds and finals with his horses. And he didn’t get cracked off in the camp once. He didn’t bring home any ribbons but was happy with his efforts.
As I tend to do at these things, I fell in love.
Not with other blokes though.
With horses. How handsome is THIS boy?
And this breathtaking black beauty? Glossy and gorgeous!
Of course, there were a couple of palominos and a chestnut that caught my eye too – hello Sandy, Tradesman and Trooper!
And at one point I got all arty-farty when a rainbow materialised over the grounds…
Actually, I could do with a rainbow and some luck at the moment. Not sure if I have mentioned how our washing machine died, our satelite television no longer has a picture (our only television channels out here), and our phone has been playing up?
Well, I arrived home yesterday to transfer the photos taken over the weekend to discover my external hard drive doesn’t want to work anymore. Just like that. Which would be fine-ish, except… ALL OUR AMERICAN TRIP PHOTOS are on the bloody thing.
Can you picture me here, trying very VERY hard not to panic?
*deep breath*
I shall be spending the next couple of days hoping and praying our local magician computer man can wave a wand extract my 5000 photos from the little bloody black box hard drive this week.
So Chapter 8 of the FairyBlogTale is on hold, my friends. Until a modern (tech) miracle takes place. Cause clearly I am a magnet for machinery mahem.
It’s no wonder I love horses so much.

Those horse photos are so beautiful I could cry. Such fine animals and riders–all of them. GO Miss S!!! Sorry about that puppy, Violet. Glad Dash survived the spill. Mr.I looks better that Hugh Jackman. (I’ve watched “Australia”) several times.)
But OHHHHNOOOO! for the stubborn little black box. Hoping the techy angels smile down upon you, bringing back the photos so we can see more of THE TRIP (even though you didn’t go to Yellowstone and Grand Teton Park–next time, right?)

Aaaah, BB – what memories of yesteryear you have brought back. Campdrafting!
We had these at the Moree Pony Club, 1950’s. However then the steers had horns!
I don’t recall dehorning in those days, maybe one of the Aussie commentators may know if this is true?
Of course you had plenty of practice in the paddocks of the property (ranch for US readers), in separating young steers, young heifers and barren cows from mobs.
Like young Dash, I hit the ground plenty of times, but no medics. Had one horse looking at me in a stupid manner, and a stockman swearing on how useless I was and to get back on the “bloody horse”!
Thanks again for the memories – almost 60 years ago – how time flies?????
Cheers

Technology is not my friend. I have a cell phone (as reported), but you know, I keep forgetting about it. I was sitting in class and someone’s phone was ringing. I looked around wondering who it was, because that is the one thing that will make a teacher reeeeeeally mad. Then I realized that everyone was looking at me. And I went, “oh, yeah. I have a cell phone…” I hadn’t recognized the ring tone because no one had ever called me before.
I’m afraid that if I begin to actually rely on technology, it will poop out on me.
Yikes on Dash. Darn! for poor puppyless Violet. Good for Mr. I. And one giant cccccccccccc-eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaapppppppp! about the pictures on your hard drive.
