Cool Squirrels!

As I alternately wrangle housework and  try to put the next New York instalment of the BlogFairyTale together, I thought I would share a little interlude from our Day 4 in NYC.

You will recall (from the last chapter) that our kids had seen snow for the first time, seen and inspected the Statue of Liberty and had a series of snowball fights (all before lunch!).  And so it was unsurprising that the ferry ride back to Manhattan Island saw Violet pass out momentarily from the excitement of it all.   As we unloaded and walked out into the park near the ferry terminal, she kept up the facade of sleeping (why not, when Daddy is there to carry you above that cold snow!).

However we spotted something darting through the snow that we knew would instantly inspire our girl into ‘waking properly’…

Cara and Debby will know what I am talking about… Violet was quite obsessed with …

We don’t have ’em in Australia.  Well not where we live anyway… possums maybe, koalas (if you know where to look) and marsupials by the truckload…

But this little dude?  So cute – even if at times he resembled not so much a possum, as an…

I believe BB that they are considered by many in the USA as “pests”. However, I thought they were great, much to the consternation of US friends!
As usual great reporting on your trip. Do you ever sleep??????
    Cheers

Enjoyed the interlude. The shots of the squirrel in the snow are delightful! And the final shot?…Well I just had to laugh. Must taste good what ever is buried down there.

Oh, that did tickle Cara…she will love this post. She still laughs: Violet confided to her that she wanted to see a squirrel very badly, and Cara assured her that she would see a squirrel before her trip was done. And Violet said, “Are they very big?” Cara answered, “Well some of them get pretty big.” Little Violet’s eyes went big, and she whispered “Bigger than me?” Cara described it as ‘the cutest thing ever!’

We don’t call the gray squirrels pests here in the woods. (They are more likely to be called ‘dinner’) but the little red squirrels are very destructive. They will get into an attic and chew on wiring and build huge nests in the walls.

Squirrels? Around here they’re considered rats with fancy coats. The greys have been getting into my attic for years, chewing holes in the walls and once, through the roof. I detest gray squirrels. However, I have red squirrels at the cottage and flying squirrels and they’re fine by me because they stay outside where they belong. Yup, send Violet to me and I’ll show her flying squirrels.

Great shots. Don’t you just love the ambient light you get from snow!? Know about kids “sleeping” so they can get a free ride and an extra cuddle from their daddy. Awwwh.

As for squirrels and snow….We get pkgs of nuts for Christmas and share the ones we don’t like with the squirrels. They haul them off to carefully bury them in the snow heaped up by the snowplow. I guess they think snow will work as well as dirt to preserve their stash. It doesn’t. Snow lasts a loooong time but not that long.

What a pity you only use ‘Aussie bush’ shots on your calendar!
Those photos of the squirrels in the snow are postcard perfect!
It must have been hard to walk away…
    Love them…lots!

      Good idea Debby!
And BB…maybe one of them could be the smaller size…cause thats all that will fit in my ‘calendar space’ in the kitchen. I’ve had to miss out on the 2 previous calendars for that reason…would love a ‘truly Aussie’ Calendar up on the wall for a change.

Don’t tell Violet but a lot of people around here call them tree rats. They do love to nest in attics and walls and do damage to home in the process. I have hunted them and eaten them and they are quite good but little ones with a fascination with them might not like the thought of squirrels being shot for dinner…
