Kids, calves and Christmas photos

(Alternative title: Never Work with Children or Animals. Pretty sure no-one has thought of that line before.)

So it’s Christmas Eve here at Granite Glen.  And I have just been accosted by the little redhead in the foreground of this picture…

She totally thinks she is Lucille Ball, this one.  Demanding little diva!  And as the human whom Bay Leaf thinks is her mother, I get a LOT of poddy loving every single time I step into the poolyard/Poddy Paradise.  And while I love her (especially after her unusual and sad entry into this world) my sense of humour at her antics is wearing a little thin.  She gallops towards me every time she sees me, quite sure a bucket of milk will be her reward if she slobbers over every part of me and stands on my toes.

Girlfriend does NOT take ‘NO’ for an answer.

Remember her little buddy, Horseradish the once-pathetic poddy who lost all his hair?

Well, he is doing very well now and is a bit more respectful than his red friend – happy just to have a good scoop of calf crumbles delivered into his feed bin three times a day.  What a tough life these two do lead…

Of course, being bovine children, they are curious and cute too.  (Except when slobbering and standing on one).

Pretty much everything in the poolyard has been tasted.  Sucked. Chewed. Slobbered on.

And when they run out of things to lick, they groom each other.

And I admit, that IS kinda cute. From a distance…

And yes, before you ask, that IS  a calf poop in the background there. Or, as I like to refer to it just before I run over a dried one on the mower, fertiliser. (Time and motion, people, time and motion!)

I had a brain snap and decided to try to get both Axel (the ludicrous Great Dane) and Bay Leaf in our Christmas photos this year.  Because (apparently) I am nuts.

Salina was visiting and decorated the poolyard, and the star of the show, Ms Bay Leaf.

You will be pleased to know the tinsel on the left has been burned.

Dash made the mistake of allowing Bay Leaf to suck his hand, in order to coax her into shot.

Unfortunately she refused to STOP it once we began shooting…

Oh LOOK – both animals in shot, reindeer horns in place, and only a litre of drool to be seen.

We actually ended up with a few usable shots, although Bay Leaf failed to look at the camera at all.

And Dash ended up with very pruney fingers…

I guess it all went pretty much as expected.

So without further ado (or drool) here is YOUR virtual Christmas card…

Have an awesome day.

May chaos reign in the nicest possible way in your household.

What a great tale: the summer of 2011 will long be remembered by all of us thanks to your willingness to share.

Happy Holidays to the Granite Glen Gang. However many legs they sport !~!

    Ahhh – ye whiff etc.
You just manage via your blog photos to bring back so many memories of when I was the age of those two – no swimming pool, of course, just the Baron River or the hot bore springs. Outdoor washing was quite the order of the day/night in those 1950’s! Ponies and the rider often bathed together – not real sure if the pony had as much fun with the lashings of Sunlight soap – ha ha.
Photo #7 of young Dash in agony that really gave me a laugh. Poddies do develop teeth and “ouch” they can hurt, of course, with no intention of afflicting undue pain, in this case, “Bayleaf”.
I have this feeling that “bayleaf” will have a very long life. She shows so much affection. Just hope you don’t get up one morning and find her with a “swim floater” thing on enjoying the delights of your pool. If Dash and Violet can do it, why not her? Oh dear, come to think of it, could be a very messy pool to clean.
Looks like a cool Christmas in Brisbane and the beach crowds will not be too happy with closures.
    Have a great day.
And thanks for the memories of yesteryears.

This post is just overflowing with cuteness!!! I don’t know when I’ve been as entertained by a collection of your photos. The kiddos, the poddies, Axel – what a treat! Your final result was grand.
(did love the butt-up on Axel in the second to last shot…he wanted to play!)

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Notice the telltale head shape difference of the two calves.
Have a grand day – from the valley of the great Ohio River USA – Bill
