The Bush

A Matter of Opinion: which sunset?

OK. I have a little challenge for you. Don’t run away – it’s not hard. Promise.
Late yesterday I had to pick the boys up from another part of Granite Glen. At 5.30pm. Right on dark. Right on sunset. And I couldn’t help it, but I HAD to stop for a minute along the way. OK, twice. OK, three times. But only a minute each time. Really. But don’t tell the boys… they had to wait about three minutes!
Anyway, I need your opinion. Cause I’m thinking of maybe making one of these images into a poster for the next Mystery Photo prize.
And I’d like to know what rocks your boat and rings your bells
So… which of the following sunset images appeals most?

This one?

(Taken as the dust from the truck wafted across the gully between me and the Knob. Or the Knob and I. Whatever.)

Or this one?

Man I love this hill – which we call The Knob. It features heavily in my sunsets… you may have noticed?

Or this one?

NB Bush Babe’d Dad will not like this photo – he’ll say: those wires aren’t pulled tight enough!

Or this?

Bush Babe’s Mum likes this one best… she’s an artist and she said the proportions are right. But BB kinda likes the one above. For no particular reason!

Or this very last-bit-of-ambient-light-slightly-African-looking photo? Y’know… I’m kinda drawn to this one too. It’s the space I think.

Which is your favourite? And why? I really want to know…

Ooohhhhh, the last one. Definitely the last one.
    The colour is just gorgeous.
The fence photos say “Australian outback” though, and I like the first of those two shots. Something about the perspective, I think.

I like the fence photos. I like the first one as well. I like photos that capture Ma Nature in all her glory, but the fence is a reminder of the human contribution to this world…and the first photo shows how small that contribution is, compared to the wonders of the natural world. What I also like is that, even though it is a fine fence and one that looks tough enough to contain several tons of beef on the hoof, you get the sense of the fragility of man compared to the eternal and unrelenting face of nature.

*whew* I think that I’ll go not watch the Olympics now.

Seriously, nice pictures BB. All of ’em.

I like the first fence photo. It appeals to the eye because of the rule of thirds which is a compositional rule used in the visual arts. Wikipedia explains why it works like this “Proponents of this technique claim that aligning a photograph with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the photo than simply centering the feature would.”

As always your eye for the right proportions is impeccable.

The top one is the most mysterious and is my favourite. I feel like I’ve been there – it is familiar to me. 🙂

    Home to cold Canberra tomorrow.

I like the top fence photo as well. I almost went with the second fence photo, but the first one got me in the end. I like the lighting better – deeper tones.

    Beautiful work.

Well, you do like to ask the tough questions, now, don’t you! I like all of them, pretty much for the same reasons all the others’ stated as their reasons (i’m kinda lazy like that, saying, “Me too!”. But like you, I love the drama and richer colors in the final foto. Final answer. Well, maybe. Yeah. I like the lone tree, the rich colors of the clouds with a pink blush on the the bottom right of the shot. Yep.

I like 2 the best because you get a more ‘panoramic’ veiw of the sunset, but I also like 4 because of the fence 5 because of the simplicity of the tree against the sky.

My vote is for #2, The Knob looks so peaceful and quiet.

It reminds me that when the sun is setting for you it’s coming up over on my side of the world.

they’re all gorgeous shots, but i think the one i’m most drawn to is the first of the fence shots. it’s holding the the rule of 3rds and i like how the clouds cross behind the fence posts and the proportion of clear sky. it’s like having dark, light, lighter in a flow.

i also like the last one as well. if it’d been an old decrepit barn instead, it could’ve been a photo of a saskatchewan sunset.

I like the last two. I’m hard pressed to choose between them.
Excellent photos. Hubby just peered over my shoulder and saw the wombat below. He said “What in the world is THAT?” lol. Nope, I’ve never seen a wombat on a leash either! I learn new things every day, lol.

I love the first fence photo and the last photo with the tree. I can’t tell you why they just appeal to me more.

Living on the west coast I sometimes forget that the sun doesn’t set over the ocean everywhere!

  • Jenni

I like them all, but definitely the first one best. The barbed wire photos could have been taken across the street from my house!

  • Leonie

I like the second fence photo best – lovely clarity of the tree, fence and grassline. Mind you they are all gorgeous, but that one’s my favourite.

  • Bush Babe (of Granite Glen)

Man – that was amazing guys!! You have almost voted for them all in different way… and I totally loved the explanations of why you chose. Really made me stop and think. Which I hardly ever do (not about WHY I like a photo anyway!). I’m very instinctive and I find I do my best stuff when i DON’t think about it – writing or photos. It trips me up, thinking too much, and I lose my flow. Whatever that means…

But anyhoo, thanks so much for stopping and thinking for me. You are very good at it, and I may have to get you to do it a bit more for me. You’re so much better at it than me!!

    Hugs
    BB

PS I’m still non the wiser as to which pic I should have for the next prize!!

  • Bush Babe (of Granite Glen)

PS Just thought you should know that Dad said:

Cripes, those posts are old. D’you know that was the first fence I built after I came home from school….

    And SSB said:

Y’know, that stay does NOT look good enough to hold that post. I’d better check it tomorrow.

    Men… they are SOOOO unromantic!!!

    Heh!
    BB
