Foal update… little scare!

Remember Cute Stuff 2*?
The gorgeous little chestnut filly born here just before Christmas…

*Yes it’s true, we still have no proper name for our pair of darling baby horses here… I’m working on it!!

Well we have had a ‘little hiccup’ since the last update.
We noticed a worryingfast-growing lump on her side, and decided to play it safe and get the vet out to check her out last week. I admit I hadn’t picked it up initially, but when I trawled back through my pics of her first handling, I realised you can see the very beginnings of it…
See that light coloured patch?

See… on her ribs back near her flank?
Well, it grew from this to the size of a man’s fist within a week.

Not good.

And our vet thought it best to remove it to check out the problem…
Without going into the graphic details, I’ll say that it was a good news-bad news event.

Good news: a splintered bit of rib bone (from an unknown incident) had been isolated by the body as a foreign body, with lots of inflammation at the site. No cancer. Whew!

Bad news – a nasty wound, lots of injections and a mare and foal confined to muddy yards.

Not happy, Jan!

As a result, Cutestuff 2 thinks we are all out to inflict grievous bodily harm on her. (These blessed humans sticking needles into a girl’s bottom at every opportunity!) She is never very pleased to see any of us, especially when one of our hands are obscured behind our back, stealthily disguising a sharp instrument.

Although the wound is still a long way from healed, she is moving freely so we have all fingers crossed for her speedy recovery. Even if she rolls her eyes and dashes behind her Mum every time I come anywhere near her.

*Sigh!*

Sometimes it really sucks being a caregiver!

Glad everything will be okay. This could be a blessing in the long run. She will be well aclimated to handling and when you are done poking her she will be glad to have you around. Could turn her into that gentle kids horse that Violet will ride.
I was rehabbing a horse a few years back that was going to be put down because she was dnagerous, not making much progress until she slice open her hind leg kick another horse. After all of the doctoring she decided humans were okay and it was a big turn around. She now works cattle, ropes, and loves her owner more than anything in the world.
Weird how things turn out sometimes.

Ah, poor little thing. At least you caught it before it got too infected. She’ll come around to liking everyone again. This is just her feisty stage and she’ll outgrow that soon enough.(Straightening shoulders) I have experience in this area.

(OK, I can’t even say that with a straight face.) But I do have experience raising children, and she will forgive you. I used to have to sit on my Eldest to clip her toenails, and she sometimes takes me out for lunch, now! See? It’ll be fine.

So glad you caught that. She will never know how much appreciation she owes you!

Of course this is during your branding week, so you have SO MUCH spare time! Seems it always goes that way.

Blessings to little cute stuff and to yours!

  • Debby

I think if you just explain ‘this was for your own good’ and ‘really, this hurts me more than it hurts you’, why she’ll get over this just fine.

  • Mom L

And don’t forget (adding to Debby’s comment) “This experience will build character!” Poor little tyke – glad you caught it! Nancy in Atlanta

Ha ha, Debby, splitting a side here!
Glad the little jewel will be ok. Wonder how she got a cracked rib? Maybe during birth? She looked pretty out of it in those first pics. She is so beautiful.
Thanks for sharing during your busy time.

Glad to know the little pony princess is going to be well, because ya’ll are on top of things–even in the midst of tons of work going on all around you!

She is just beautiful and will, now, be able to continue to grow up healthier!

Funny WV: irtions. I’m sure little sweet stuff #2 has felt lots of irtions lately!

  • Pony Girl

Wow, what an ordeal! I’m sure it will heal well, and besides, all of the extra attention will hopefully help her bond more with her human helpers. Although, human helpers with needles—maybe hard to bond with?! 🙂

Good luck with her! I’m sure she’ll come out of it just fine! For the wound – do you all have Underwood’s out there? When my mare put a fence through her leg (while preggers no doubt) we were looking for super uninvasive ways of treating it that would keep her calm and without having to shoot her up all the time (she was only a few weeks from foaling). Discovered Underwoods and am hooked. No proud flesh, can’t feel a scar and the only way I know it happened was a slight discoloration in a few hairs on the site.

You spray it on and then cover it with baking soda. Don’t even need to flush each day, just re-spray and sprinkle on the powder.
    Here’s a link fot it…

oh my goodness! that is so scary. My mind went immediately to cancer. Poor little girl, that’s a rough start. how do you think it happened? Whenever i think about those foals i think of dingos. And i get scared. Way to be positive eh?” Give her a pat for me!

  • Andrea

Oh goodness!! I am glad she is alright!! That can be really scary!! I am glad it wasn’t cancer and I am glad she is going to alright. And all the handeling will do her some good.

OH dear, poor girl. this is the down side to owning animals, haveing to cause a little pain to fix a big ouch 🙁 My 80lb irish setter is such a glutton that she LOOKS for the treats when you have to torture her with those nasty nail clippers or trim a matt out of her hair.

Poor little baby girl!! It would have been much worse for her if it had festered up and burst, though how do you explain alternatives to a baby. Guess you will have to start going out with some kind of treats in your hands.

Glad it was way more good news than bad!!

Helen, PW, Sue2u2 & Pony Girl – she's getting a little better with us despite the constant poking and needles – tougher perhaps?

Theresa – an Irish setter? Wow! Sensational!

Andrea – oh, I hope so. Either that or she'll be plotting some serious revenge!

Kate – yeah, it was a big relief! Consider her patted.

Danielle – that looks amazing. Also had some advice recommending using (wait for it) transmission oil!! Has anyone heard of this??

Debby and Mom L – ha hah ha! Yeah. We tried that. She doesn't believe me. Told me so in no uncertain terms!

Sabra – splitting a side? Oh dear. That's the winner!

Lydia – finally getting my head above water…
