The Bush

Come drive with me, let’s drive… part1

We have been a little busy here on the property lately.
Lots of bookwork and DNA testing for cows and blah-de-blah blah...
But seeing as how it was our anniversary last week, Mr Incredible took time out to take us all to town for a pub meal (not glam but not-too-bad food and someone else washing up!).
And part of the celebratory day was a drive. Something other than the straight-to-town-and-straight-home route usually taken in the minimum possible time…

Would you like climb into the Prado to join us for part of the journey?
I’ll take that as a ‘yes’…
Ready?
Firstly I’d like to introduce you to our dash and the view beyond…
For you Yanks, the driver (Mr Incredible) is seated to the right of screen.
Don’t freak out.
He knows what he is doing.
And it IS the right side of the car to have the steering wheel!
It’s also really important to not be scared of dirt roads.
Really, they are ALMOST as good as bitumen (blacktop), the dust will eventually wash off, and have waaayyy less traffic.
Massive bonus!
And you can stop every so often
right in the middle of the road
without a truck rear-ending you.
Shall we try?
Good, this’ll do.
Ignore Mr Incredible’s frown.
He’s not all that keen on the ‘stopping-regularly-to-take-photos’ part of being married to me.
Seriously, after 14 years of knowing me and eight years of marriage, you think he’d be settled with it, wouldn’t you? Heh.

But if you don’t stop,
then you can never fully appreciate
treasures like this

Hello Old Abandoned House…

and Fabulous Wonky Shed…

That little 28-200mm zoom lense was all-out for this snap.
Can’t you just imagine the scene half-a-century ago…
A gaggle of kids rounding up shaggy ponies in the paddocks, Ma and Pa having a hot cuppa on that open verandah, looking proudly over the then-new carport housing some pale blue 1950s Holden rig? No TV, no Nintendo DS’s, no dial-phones, no internet?
I shudder a little at the final thought…
Then a little further along the track, this fence-and-road-and-horizon-and-power-pole view rises up before you.
I took this one through the windscreen.
It was too soon after the 1950s family home to stop again!!
I love the openness-yet-tamed feel of this scene…
You?

Oh look…

It’s a groovy still-used littlechurch sitting calmly on its own, out on the plateau…
It was somewhere near here that my brother asked his girlfriend to marry him. He was in a ute. A red ute. She said yes. They now have three kids and are all happy little Vegemites.
There is good vibe to this place.
You can feel it… can’t you?

Had enough yet?
Let me know if you are
carsick, bored to tears,
or ready for another instalment
-to be continued-

Your top photo in my Google reader caught my dh’s eye as he walked up behind me at my desk this morning. He had to have a look, which is rare for him.

Besides the lovely blue skies and green grass, he had to comment on the roads. He says they are even more country than ours:o) When we lived in rural Ohio, every country road was paved. Here in Kansas there are roads in the middle of Wichita that still are not paved and most of the smaller county roads are not paved. We sometimes complain about the poor condition of some of those county roads, but maybe we should be more thankful.

There’s nothing I love more than a drive out in the country, but I have the same problem with my dh not wanting to stop. (Yet in the middle of that last sentence he calls me from his drive to work and says that I should get outside and take pictures as there is a lovely, low fog this morning.) Little country churches are one of my favorite things. That tree in front of the one here seems out of place though–one lone tree, so much out of scale with the building, and too manicured. It isn’t too often that I think a tree is out of place. Thanks for sharing your drive with us!

My favorite thing to do is drive aimlessly down dirt roads. I love dirt roads. I’d roll on them if the gravel didn’t hurt so much.

I love going for drives, too! My dad and I did it last summer after they moved to a new area and I took lots of pictures from the open window…luckily, there wasn’t much traffic and he was willing to stop for me.
Oh, and I think I might make an offer on that abandoned house….
    can’t wait for “installment two!”
p.s. I just love it when you use the word wonky! 🙂

I enjoyed the drive – thank you! It made me realize that is has been way too long since I took a drive just to…..drive. I moved to Gaithersburg, MD in 1995 and immediately spent weekends “just driving” to see new countryside. Haven’t done that since.

That was so beautiful & please thank Mr I for me for stopping so that you could take those beautiful photos. Just absolutely lovely.

Oh & we have a little church like that. It's called the Cowboy Church & everyone is welcome!

Loving the drive..looking forward to the rest of it.

    Pictures are beauitful, love the
    blue skies. Nothing like driving
in the country. The one with all
the trees reminds me of where my
mom lives in Fl., looks just like
    her area.
