The Bush

Come drive with me, let’s drive… part 2

Apparently no-one got too carsick last post,
so here is the second instalment for those not adverse to dirt roads
and the weirdness offered by the Great Australian Bush!
Seatbelts done up?
Righto!
Take it away Mr I!
The second part of our journey was on the way home
from our romantic (read: non-washing up-involving) lunch
at the local pub…
for the record I had a steak sandwich.
I always do.
(Keeping those ol’ iron levels healthy there!)
So this is one of the views from the road about half an hour into the trip.
This is country I have never seen before
despite the fact that it is within an hour of home.
I am a bit ashamed of this, I have to say.
I know certain cities better than I know my own back yard!
It is beautiful, no?

This shot shows some Brangus cattle grazing contentedly on a flat near a creek amongst the blue gums. It doesn’t get a whole lot more restful, and Queensland country, than this…

I heart blue gums!

And then we stumbled across something really remarkable which cause me to call out:

STOP. RIGHT. NOW.

And with hardly a long-suffering sigh, Mr Incredible did halt the Prado.

I am going to show you the pics in reverse order…

see if you can work out what it is…

And here endeth the lesson:

When a woman weilding a Nikon calls out, you must stop the car to take photos.

Imagine missing that prickly pear in flower?

And here is the final shot of our trip.

Another dirt road.

Granite Glen was still 40 minutes drive away, but I was sated.

Was it good for you too?

What a great place you live in! So beautiful. And i’ve always wondered what a prickly pear looks like, it’s so pretty. I love that color. I’m saving my pennies for an Aussie vacation and was going to ask you your favorite places. Now i think i’m going to head to the country instead of the cities. 🙂

That prickly pear was huge… Y’all grow ’em big down under!!

I’d love to see your country in real life, but next to that, your tours are giving us glimpses of the ‘wonder that’s down under’ .

    Thank you for sharing.

Whew, I need a nap after all that driving (car trips make me sleepy! 🙂
What part of that prickly pear does the juice come from? I’ve heard of prickly pear juice….and a prickly pear martini, as well!
Stop by my blog and see the great pics you sent me, they are featured again on my post about McLeod’s!!

I see prickly pears on Capri, when I go to Italy. They are up at the lookout.

I’ll be back visiting Capri in 7 months.

Remember prickly pear jam at Proston?

Remember trying to pick prickly pear to make our own jam at home?

Remember trying to pick out prickly pear spikes after trying to pick prickly pear?

I hope you are having a WONDERFUL BIRTHDAY!!!!

Oh – and my wv is birds

Gorgeous prickly pear photos. I actually took photos of ours the other day but they are no where near as nice as yours. We have a prickly pear cactus about the size of the one you photographed in our back garden. It’s absolutely massive. The Handsome Austrlian’s family LOVES the fruit. They come around each year at this time and carefully pick and peel them. A lot of work involved.

  • Jenni

Wow! That is a ginormous prickly pear! It’s gorgeous, too. I’ve mostly seen small cactus with just one or two leaves and occasionally a larger clump, certainly never anything that size.

I loved the ride! Now I’ve got yet another favorite BB photo – the Brangus (is that REALLY a cattle name?) cattle and blue gum trees!

And I’d love to hear Jeanie rattle off the old “How much wood would a woodchuck chuck…..” piece!

Happy belated birthday. I don’t connect things very well. Jeanie even said it was your birthday. *sigh* Anyhoo, LOL at Jeanie’s picking prickly pear tongue twister. Easier writ than said. Lovely pictures. Looked like a lovely day to celebrate.

Belated Happy Birthday, BB. Hope you had a great one. I sure love your blog and your amazing pictures. That prickly pear is spectacular!!!

Fantastic drive – can we do it again soon?! I loved the prickly pear – gorgeous. And those Brangus did indeed look restful. Truly a beautiful place you live in. Thanks for the ride!

  • Bush Babe

Oh thanks guys for the birthday wishes… too sweet…

I don’t really advertise these things!! Really, you’d think Jeanie would know better, seeing as how hers is imminent!

I have to say, that the photos of the prickly pear are now among my favourites.
    🙂

Happy birthday you spring chicken 😛
Yep, love prickly pear in flower, up around the backroads of central Victoria it’s a bright splash of colour when you drive around a corner.
