Weekend weather – wet and wild!

So, yesterday I washed my car.

I did so.  And you’ll NEVER guess what happened?  Today, it rained.  There are some people who have theories about washing cars and rain.  Not me. I’m always astounded when one seems to coincide with t’other.  That happens when you yearn for wet weather a lot… it’s bad luck to believe in the Old Wives tales.

Of course, while we welcome the wet, it possibly COULD have come at a slightly more convenient moment.  We spent almost 11 hours at the yards today – pregnancy testing our breeder cows.  (Well, Mr Incredible preg tested and I scanned electronic ear tags, typed in information, prepared ID tags and innoculated… sounds like I did more in that list, doesn’t it?   Don’t be fooled.  Mr I worked his ‘hiney’ off. He’s a lot more hands on than me.  You can also thank me for NOT taking photos of his job.  It’s mucky.)

While my Dad and our jillaroo mustered and handled the bigger mobs of cattle, Mr I and I (?) worked them through the crush one-by-one, and Dash and Violet helped (sporadically) by opening and shutting the crush gates, and (mostly) riding around the hayshed on their long-suffering horses. I do wish I had photos of that – they had a blast and hardly needed us at all. The best baby-sitting set-up of all – quiet horses in a confined space!

Almost as good as a hay rack, from which to peruse the world and debate the intracies of the falling speed of straw…

I love this photo.  They had no idea I was taking this shot, content in their own company and banter. (Of course a few minutes later World War Three erupted, but let’s not spoil the image.)

So anyway, yards that looked like THIS a couple of weeks ago (when we were weaning calves)…

Are now MUD.

You will have to take my word for it though… I had no time to take pics. (Did you SEE that list of jobs I had? Heh.)

Instead of sharing our wet, muddy day – of me trudging around in gumboots and everyone riding around in Drizabones – I am posting up a couple of shots I quite forgot to post up from the weaning.

Remember this photo?

I think I teased about what my son might be doing here…

Well, this is the rest of that series of images of Dash Intent on Harrassing Something Almost to Death.

He won’t let up – like a good cattle dog…

Poor little lizard.

He lost his tail in sheer terror, despite the gentleness of his captor.

(And yes, I do trim my son’s fingernails every month or so. Don’t be cheeky!)

More (wet, cold) yardwork tomorrow.

Anyone feel like warming me up with stories of weather or kiddos in your neck of the woods.

*Yawn*

Night peoples…

BB: It must have taken some self control to focus on the scanning and recording of the momma cattle when there were so many photographs to be taken. Your word pics do a nice job, though.

I’m going to have to look up jillaroo and Drizabone (my spell check doesn’t like those words either). That is one thing that makes your blog so fun. We visit and share our common interests and our variety.

The best kid photos are candid. They (kids) can find so much enjoyment in the world.

Hope your next car wash lasts more than a day and I hope any lizards we find on our trek get to keep their tails.

Love the kiddie stories. My daughter and son in law are farmers here in florida. My grandson had heard us talking about his dad having a farmers tan. The other evening he took off his shoes and his feet were so white and his legs a golden brown. I said “Elijah, what happened to your feet” he said Gram, I have farmers feet. His mom uses sun screen daily but he just turns s nice brown every summer. I am so jealous of his nice brown legs.

    OK, if I must
    Broome yesterday – 33c
    Port Hedland today – 30c
(which almost makes up for the fact that we’re in ‘port hedland’)
But 4 days ago it was Hobart – 5c
    No wonder I’m so confused!
(Dash’s nails remind me of Miss 4’s!)

    Drizabone – slicker brand.

jillaroo – female cattle musterer learning the trade.

Side note – that Jillaroo had better be ‘Salina. If it’s anyone else, I’m going to be very hurt, having my eye on being the inexperienced helper one day. But, if it’s Salina, I’ll forgive her for taking my job…being that she’s family and all.

How hard can it be to hold the little stick while a cow pees on it?

You know…I was just wondering about the “peeing on a stick” business when I read Debby’s comment.

Looks like y’all have been very busy!! Glad the kiddos have such a good time while y’all work. Cute pix!

Well, here in the Houston, Texas area it’s 85 F (29 C), with a heat index of 96F (35 C). It actually FEELS much hotter due to the humidity (about 22%), no rain. Hard to breathe. Blech.

I don’t have any good stories yet but, we have skinks in yard that look just like the one your lil boy is holding. Ours have electric blue tails. Very hard to catch.
