Icons, odds and ends
Got your work boots on? Steel-capped? Excellent. cause I have some more work lined up here for y’all.
This will be the second last poll for the 2011 BB Calendar – I’m saving the horses til last and then we are DONE. (Well, your job is done, and mine is just beginning really. I shall need to sit down and tally up the votes for each section and allocate some images to pages. Whoo-hoot! But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.)
There is no real theme to these images, other than they are last-minute additions to my ‘Potential 2001 Calendar Photos’ folder. Some only taken since I started this poll project going, some stumbled on in archives and pulled out to dust off and consider. Something my Dad would call the “Odds and Sods” file. I would like to think of them as maybe a collection of broadly iconic Aussie bush sights.
Shall we get started?

fence sunsetA photo taken just a week or so ago… as the grass fires left haze in the atmosphere and created some smokin’ photo opps. (Sorry. Had to be said!) Love the ancient fence disappearing into the distance, the whacky bottle tree silhouette, the layers of orange. Yum.
Taken when Dash Violet and I went for a walk one day in our house paddock. This tough little flower was blooming against an old dead tree lying near the driveway. I adore the contrast of delicate and weathered.
Shot the same day we bought Ira, the bull whose sons and daughters are now frolicking merrily around the breeder paddocks. This is Mr Incredible’s RM Williams’s boots crossed in concentration as the auctioneer sells of lots at the sale.
mirage roadA discovery from the archives – the road and powerlines and horizons MADE me take this shot. Look at all that disappearing perspective. Patches and wobbles and mirages. Very Aussie.
bottletree sunsetI know, I know. ANOTHER bottle tree photo. ANOTHER sunset. But hey… it caught my eye in the little trawl I did a couple of days ago, and I’m going to give it a chance.
silosI never could figure out where to put this shot. But I like it. Milo fields, steel silos, rolling hills, blue sky. The colours of my world. (And the sight I see every time I drive home from our local town, 50km from Granite Glen).
wattle roadThis shot taken this morning, as I drove home from reading with the kids at Dash and Violet’s little one teacher school. (The kind of school where parent help is imperative. And wonderful to get a chance to do.) The wattle is out in full bloom at the moment. And it contrasts nicely with the red road!

You sure know how to make things hard BB….as with all your photos it’s very hard to pick one over another….Fence Sunset is just gorgeous and wins my overall vote…the next one was tricky, I love Mr. I’s R.M.’s but I am thinking your calendar will be in big demand overseas so Wattle Road wins my second vote, what more Australian can you get than our beautiful wattle and the red richness in the road beyond.

Such beautiful shots.

Okay, I put on my work boots, rolled up my sleeves and still couldn’t handle the pressure. Aaarrgh! Fine. Like Elizabeth I went with Fence Sunset and then settled on the boots just ’cause the composition is so cool and the sharp focus on the foreground and the great bokeh effects in the back.

I loved the bottle tree sunset. A little softer than the fence one. And I loved the wattle. I love wattle time of year, except that everyone thinks my unending cold is sinus-related due to the season. It isn’t.

The Silos look like northern California where I live. But like most others Wattle Road was by far the best of the lot. Saving the best for last!

No wonder you want our help! I wouldn’t want to have to pick and choose if those were my images! Good luck from up here in New Jersey.

Wow! Again – all of them are stunning for different reasons. However, Fence Sunset grabbed me immediately (I have a special love for sunrises and sunsets) and held me all the way through. Until I saw the last one, and the vibrant yellow splashed over the beautiful red road took my breath away. Well done!!!

I guess I’m partial to the sunsets, but it was sure hard to decide between those and the wattle pic. Beautiful!

I’m a sucker for sunsets…. 🙂

I think what made this so difficult is that it WAS odds & ins rather than a specific subject. Any of these are calendar-worthy.
I didn’t choose the top photos mainly because the colors were too similar (it seems) to one I picked in another poll entry. I really liked the boots, too.
What I kept coming back to, though, were the wattle picture and the milo bins. They got my votes.

Well, both of my picks needed it, because they are currently wooden-spooners!!
Love the leaning pole in mirage road, and wattle evokes something in me (not quite as violent as your reactions!)

That’s right – for those who don’t know me ‘in person’ – I am allergic to wattle. The things I suffer for my ‘art’. Heh.

Uh, what is a wooden-spooner? Please translate for the mid-westerner.

Awarded to last place, Lydia. Is that an Aussie-ism? Will have to add it to the Aussie Lingo file!

Okay! I am mesmerized by the bottle trees. I love mine that I won some time back. I want to vote for both of them on this post. I just love the silhouettes and the background colors. Mesmerized, I tell you! But the last one–the lovely yellow wattle . . . it really POPS!
You give us such heavy burdens to carry, Bush Babe! (LOL) I’m groaning under the weight. I love your photos. I crave your talent. What more can I say????
Lydia
OK, I think you like to torture us with your wonderful photos!!! I had to look, take a sip of wine, look again, a gulp of wine, and another look. then finally I just picked one, knowing that there were two others that I loved just as much. I feel like I was cheating on the other photos. Poor things! I’m so sorry! I really do love you, too!
I can only imagine how difficult it is for you to put together the calendar. thanks for sharing the burden with us! It has been fun!
Sally
That was hard to decide, all the photos are beautiful.
