Flood flashback

Thought I’d share with you a pretty amazing pic (to me anyway) of our place.

This shot was taken during the floods, just before New Year, as my cousin’s hubby took a helicopter ride back to their Alpha cattle station.  Their house had gone under during previous deluges, so they needed to be sure that their vital items were lifted into a safe spot and cattle were on higher ground as the river next to their place swelled.  Bushies were flying all over the countryside in whatever chopper they could commandeer to save stock and attempt to secure personal items. There simply wasn’t any other way to get there!

Dave took this shot as they lifted off from my aunt and uncle’s place.

I have to say, this photo shocked me a bit.

I mean I KNOW we live beside a river.  And that, when this photo was taken about 6 weeks ago, that river was filling fast.

But to see it looming around TWO SIDES of our house like this … well, let’s just say I’m glad I didn’t see it til the waters started subsiding.  This was taken before the dam (15 km downstream – to top of pic – from this point in the river) was actually full, before it hit 100%. Before it went 3 metres (nine feet) over the dam wall.  Before this river burst its banks.

This stretch of river is much more peaceful these days.  It sees boats taking to it’s upper reaches with some keen water-skiiers trying out their (somewhat rusty) skills.

Among this flock are our two kiddos, who have been introduced to the art of the kneeboard by their great-uncle Tex.

Their mother is plotting her revenge against this same wily relative, after he completely drenched her with the wake from the boat as she supervised Dash and Violet’s introduction to skiing.

But that is another story, for another day.

🙂

Sorry gramps… didn’t mean to worry you! If you could only see how fast we are peddling here to keep our (proverbial) heads above water here at the moment, you’d know it was work and not weather keeping me from this blog.

All will become clear in the next week or so for y’all.

It can truly set you back on your heels to see familiar scenes changed so DRAMATICALLY! And to see your home so threatened!! Yes, good thing you didn’t get the big picture until it was over.

Good thoughts sent to all you Auzzies. Seems you are on Mother Nature’s crap list. Now bush fires in Perth. Hope she gets over her rant soon and gives you a rest.

Those ARE scary pictures. Truly. I remembered the reports of how quickly the river rose in Toowoomba, turning into a raging torrent that swept everything away, and I got scared. In just a few minutes, your own picture could have been much, much different.

Deb – our set-up is quite different to the one that took place in Toowoomba. Our river also rose very quickly, but it is a big river bed area – in Toowoomba (well, Grantham) it was a creek trying to hold a massive downpour – there was literally nowhere for it to all go. Plus we are quite a bit higher that the water level – this photo dwarfs the house and gives a bit of an optical illusion.

But all that said, yes, you are right. Scary.
