A pony by Dad
My daughter came home from school this week in tears. She walked in to the house, hiccuping, and when i asked what was wrong, she said I had forgotten to order her book from Book Club, and how come Dash had gotten a book and she didn’t and *hiccup* it wasn’t fair…
Oh Dear. I realised Violet was completely right. I had let Dash fill out his form, promised to do Violet’s for her, then… well… got distracted. I do it a lot. (Those readers who anticipate my weather reports will know how my daughter feels. I am completely unreliable.)
As Violet slowed her hiccups to contemplate her banana smoothie, I think I might have almost teared up myself. I have myself a big fat FAIL as a mother.
Mr Incredible happened to be there at the time, to witness the tragedy, and decided to make things right. I was also in charge of tracking down (or creating) some costumes for school play. The play is to be performed at the Lions Concert at one of our little local towns – tonight actually. Violet is to be a Pony and Dash is a Janitor. Horse ensembles and overalls were added to my To Do List. And as of the start of this week, I had managed to track down… well, nothing. (Anyone see a pattern emerging here?)
So Mr Incredible GOT BUSY. He grabbed a couple of boxes, some scissors, some sticky tape and Violet. And together the two of them made…
THIS…
I KNOW! It fits her perfectly (my husband is very precise when it comes to projects), sliding snugly down over her head and with a little window for her to look out of the front. The forelock covers most of her face – something she was quite concerned about people seeing – and when Violet is doing her thankyou speeches at the end of tonight’s concert, I hope she remembers to thank Yvette, Jill and friends for stoicly giving up some of their tails for her art!
For the record, I DID help to hold the black spray paint can while Violet was transforming the paper mached cardboard into a shiny black filly. AND I managed to create a tail-of-more-horse-hair-attached-by-rubber-bands-to-belt. And I did manage to find someone who owned kids’ overalls. *bows*
The look on my daughter’s face this morning, as she showed off her completed pony head to the other kids at school, was utterly priceless. She was a proud as punch. And I wished my husband had been there to soak up that look.
So a huge Happy Father’s Day to my incredible Mr Incredible (for this Sunday).
How very lucky are my kids?

Happy Father’s Day to all those Dads out there…
…and to those whose Dads aren’t handy,
or around at the moment,
or who cannot be with their kids for some reason,
extra big hugs to you.

A great Dad rules. Your kids’ Dad ranks up in the very top of the field for horse head generating in a pinch! Gorgeous.

I firmly believe that every dad should have a little girl. As he gets older it helps keep him flexible by being wrapped around a little finger. My little girl is 37 and has a smile that makes my heart soar like an eagle.

I have many ‘fails’ as a mom. I tend to get distracted too. Cara will tell you about the time that forgot her at girl scouts. We try. We love our kids and we are not perfect, but we try. Mr I? Awesome job, sir. I wish that you would have had a video camera for this, BB!

What a great post!! I love the horse head and look forward to seeing the entire ensemble. Three cheers for Mr. I!!
Don’t be too hard on yourself, BB. We all have our “fail” moments as moms (wives, sisters, daughters, etc.). Nobody’s perfect. (which just reminded me of the book “Podody’s Nerfect” featuring Farley the technicowler calf. It’s no longer available at Amazon…would have made a nice peace offering for Violet)
