Babies, it’s cold outside! (Ch 11)

Well, as May brings with it days that are cool and dry and nights that are downright snuggly here in Oz , we once again open the (virtual) pages of our BlogFairyTale.  For those who have not been around for the whole saga, a complete chapter link list is at the bottom of this post.  If you cannot be bothered with research, suffice to say our Tale stars a Prince and Princess (travelling with their Mother and Father, who have eschewed their Royal titles) busily exploring America.  Beverly Hills and a couple of corners of New York have already been investigated.  But this Chapter, something really magic will happen in the Big Apple…

It was Day 3 in Noo Yawk, and by some kind of miracle our Family had raised themselves from their Amazing Hotel Beds and rugged themselves up in coats and scarves and gloves and beanies…

and parked themselves in a delightful (if tiny) cafe for breakfast…

Have you noticed something special about these images, Dear Reader?

nyc_0865 e

Besides the groovy big tourist bus waiting for passengers in the background (waiting for our Family, among others) and besides the whole CAN YOU BELIEVE WE ARE IN NOO YAWK thing?

nyc_0867

Yes indeedy.  Twas snowing.

SNOWING!!

(It was a Capital Letter Moment.  Even a Bold Capital Letter Moment.)

nyc_0870 e

To fully understand the momentousness of this situation, please keep in mind it never, ever snows at Granite Glen, and these two had NEVER seen snow in their lives.

And the TROUBLE the Mother and Father had getting food into the Prince and Princess, when outside it was all…

nyc_0877 e

Flakey, fabulous, fun… SNOWFLAKE CITY!

nyc_0879 e

Now for those of you who are used to snow, you will think nothing of the way the flakes dance and settle and dust fluffy frosting over every remotely horizontal surface.  But for these two little ones, it was jaw-dropping – endlessly awesome.

And even the garbage collection was a thing of beauty.

nyc_0882

(BTW New Yorkers – why no automated trucks and wheelie bins? Lack of space? The mother wastes much time pondering such things, you know.)

And then – dashing through the flakes and into the warmth of that big red bus – the Family were on their way, to Adventures Number 11/12. (Because, trust me, this day was way too imagey for just one Chapter).

nyc_0889 e

Like many Fairy Tales, this one appeared quite hazy and pretty.  Mostly because it was viewed through the flake-enrusted perspex windows… each street delightfully described by the tour guide, who then quietened the busload of excited tourists with descriptions of Ground Zero.

nyc_0909

The Family had decided that a tour of the site of the Twin Towers would not be on their agenda this trip – certainly not with the Prince and Princess.  Still, this amazing ‘artwork’ discovered in a park soon after drew exclaims from two curious little people.

nyc_0930 e

And the Mother did her level best to describe (in fairly general and not-too-confronting-for-little-people terms) why this damaged gold ball (known as The Sphere) was treasured by Americans.  To the Mother it was kind of haunting and beautiful and awful at the same time.

While she contemplated this, the Prince and Princess had found something else though.

Something white.

Something cold.

Something…

nyc_0917

THROWABLE!

nyc_0918

Look out Dash Prince!!

nyc_0920

Uh-oh!

nyc_0922 e

Look out Violet Princess!!

And while The Mother was all Look OUT , your boots will get WET, and it’s really COLD guys, and the Prince and Princess continued their war unabated, The Father quietly armed himself and walked ahead of the combatants through the white-washed, picturesque park…

nyc_0927

And into the Blog Header (top of page)… okay, his wife did that, but you have to admit the segue was as smooth as silk, no?

nyc_0933 e

And it is here that we will leave the FairyBlogTale Family – teasing you, Gentle Reader, with the pertinent question:

WHERE ARE THEY HEADED, our Family, on this snowy Noo Yawk day?

Hint #1: There is a giant gold foot involved.

nyc_0977

Hint #2: It offers an amazing view of the City Skyline.

Oh my goodness from me too BB…you had me totally fixated just by the first photo, then rolling down saddened by the Sphere, but then I saw the word THROWABLE and laughed out loud so hard I scared my cats right out of the room! This is my favourite chapter so far BB…has a kind of ‘Norman Rockwell’ feel to it…makes me want to visit. Great writing too…like your style. Love the banner…can almost hear the silence…except I know there must have been lots of giggling going on behind you!

My God you have a gift with expressing your feelings and this amazing travelogue. Remarkable.
You and the “better half” ( Aussie expression for US viewers), have given Dash and Violet something they will never forget.
I am sure that the two “young-uns” will never forget this at their informative age.
Congratulations to you and the “better half”.
    Cheers

These are fantastic pics. I can’t believe you even made garbage pretty. Thanks for showing ground zero it is very haunting. The kids reaction to snow is priceless. Can’t wait to see the statue of Liberty? B

Fantastic! Your beautifully colored garbage reminds me of a company anniversary trip to NYC in a December long ago – the, uh, sanitation crews had been on strike, and black garbage bags were piled on every corner! But, it was winter, and it was snowing – helped reduce the odor and definitely covered the bags with beauty!!!

I’ll bet the Prince and Princess miss the snow as your own temps descend!

What an exciting day for the Prince and Princess (And Mother and father too, I guess). London has the same type of garbage collection, I too wonder why they don’t have bins.
