Beyond the patio: conversations
You know how I sometimes carry on about the amazing scenery out here? The uniqueness of the Aussie landscapes, the incredible flora and fauna. Well, sometimes it gets more unique and amazing than others…
It was an overcast day as we waited for some visitors to arrive at Granite Glen recently. I looked up from my coffee and pikelets to see a little encounter going on that you might not see most other places in the world. And I thought (as I often do) that I should share…
Not 50 metres away from the house, a small flock of emus (are they a flock if they cannot fly?) were ambling along the fence from the river to the scrub on the ridge. And our horses were acting like they had never seen the giant flightless birds in their lives… Trooper in particular was snorting around like something totally freaky was going on.
And you know, I cannot really blame him. The silly creatures dashed off and returned curiously several times before I managed to get my camera loaded.
It just doesn’t matter how often I see emus, I cannot help thinking that Mother Nature and God were on something the day they invented these critters…
They stand taller than the average human, with brains the size of a child’s fist. You do the math.
Let’s just say if we were naming them appropriately, Einstein or Plato wouldn’t be among the possibilites.
I am imagining what thoughts are running through Trooper’s head here:
‘You know, it looks like a giant chook but doesn’t appear nearly as useful.’
or
‘I wonder if I could campdraft one of them around a full course?’
And then I wonder what might be running through the emu’s minds:
‘What is it we were supposed to be doing again, Homer?’
or maybe just
“DUH?”

A quick but heartfelt thankyou to those out there in blogland who have been so amazingly supportive of my calendar venture… over 20 sold in just two days! Not bad for someone who considers herself the Worst Salesperson in the World. I am delighted. And humbled. And a little bit amazed.
Thanks. 🙂 BB

You definitely have to come to Africa and see an ostrich. Someone up there was playing practical jokes the day those got created!
An ostrich’s brain is smaller than it’s eyeball. So yeah…there’s that!

Really… I need to check out the emus thing more. You’ve gotta thing they are somehow related but they DO live an AWFUL long way from each other. Been to the northern part of Africa, but not the wildlife-y end! It’s on the agenda.

Probably Trooper is trying to set up a race. Didn’t your song say that emus can run the pants off a kangaroo? Trooper took it as a challenge.
The emus? They’re all milling around muttering, “What’s ‘pants’?” (I don’t know, Cloyd.) “And ‘kangaroo’?” (I don’t know, Floyd.) What’s this running stuff? (Gees, Lloyd, I don’t know.) And Julio sniggers, “Man, that critter over there talks pure nonsense. We’d better go. Stupid might be catching.”
It’s enough to make any horse stomp and snort. No matter what your species, rampant stupidity grates on your patience.

You’re right, horses and emus are not normally in the same picture in most parts of the world.
I often think God and Mother Nature must have been on something one day when they created such creatures as the platypus, manatee, aye-ayes, and proboscis monkeys, just to name a few.
